Monsters halt Rampage

The Lake Erie Monsters shut down the sixth-highest scoring team in the AHL Friday night, stopping the San Antonio Rampage, 2-1, at Quicken Loans Arena.

The win avenges Thursday night's overtime loss at the hands of the Rampage. San Antonio got the best of the Monsters at home as they squeaked out an overtime victory, 4-3.

San Antonio began the scoring off the blade of center Mike Zigomanis at the 16:20 mark of the first period. Assisting on the power play tally were defenseman Tyler Roche and right wing Enver Lisin.

Both teams went scoreless for almost another full period as it was 20 minutes before either got back on the board.

The Monsters answered the Rampage tally in the second period as winger David Jones poked in a loose disc from the doorstep at the 18:41 mark of the second. The helpers were credited to defenseman Jeff Jillson and winger Chris Stewart. Jones' power play marker extends his point streak to 10 consecutive games.

"David has been playing very well of late and he is really starting to figure out his game. He is carving out his niche and figuring out what he needs to be successful. He is a great skater; he is big, fast and very strong. He has been a workhorse for us lately," said Monsters head coach Joe Sacco.

In the third period, the Monsters took the lead on Jones' deflection off a Mitch Love snap shot from the slot at the 14:04 mark. Wyatt Smith was also credited with an assist. Jones finished the game with his point streak intact (7G, 7A, 14 points).

The Monsters out-shot the Rampage 28-26 in the contest. In addition, the Monsters have now scored at least one power play goal in nine consecutive games (13 PPG).

"There was a little bit of everything tonight. We had some physical play. Mitch Love stepped up and made sure we were into the game physically and making sure we were watching out for each other. Mike Wall made some big stops for us also. We worked hard tonight and when you work hard it will pay off," said Sacco.

Monsters goaltender Wall stopped 25 of the 26 shots he faced. Opposing netminder David LeNeveu turned away 26 shots on the 28 he saw.

"It was a good one for the team. We let one slip through the cracks last night (Thursday). It is a log jam in our division right now, so anything can happen if we keep winning," said Wall.

The Monsters return to action on Wednesday, February 6th to face the Bulldogs in Hamilton at 7:30 p.m. on FSN Ohio. They return home to face the Grand Rapids Griffins on Friday, February 8th at 7:30 p.m.
