Cleveland's own hard-hitting professional hockey team, the Lake Erie Monsters, hit hunger where it counted the most. Today the Monsters, Wal-Mart and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission gave away holiday meals to 200 underprivileged families. The recipients were chosen by St. Martin de Porres from families that they regularly serve.

"Being able to provide families with a good meal during the holiday season is a great way to share our holiday cheer with Northeast Ohio families," said Monsters COO Randy Domain.

Several Lake Erie Monsters players and staff, along with representatives from Wal-Mart and the Sports Commission, were at St. Martin de Porres this afternoon to give away the meals, which included ham and all the fixings.

"We are excited to team up with the Lake Erie Monsters and Wal-Mart in an effort to help spread the holiday spirit in our community," said David Gilbert, president and CEO of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission.

"What a tremendous way to reach out in Northeast Ohio by giving meals to those who need them the most during this time of year," said Wal-Mart market manager Patrick Shanks.

St. Martin de Porres Family Center is a multi-purpose neighborhood center in the Collinwood/ Glenville/Forest Hills area of Cleveland. The Center provides programs for individuals, families, youth and seniors regardless of race or religious beliefs.

The Lake Erie Monsters are part of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena organization and also owned by a group led by Cavaliers Majority Owner and Quicken Loans Founder and Chairman Dan Gilbert.
