November 12, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Chicago Wolves on Saturday at The Q by a final score of 4-2. With the win, Cleveland improved to
5-7-0-1 this season and with a .423 points percentage, currently sit alone in sixth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Chicago claimed a 2-0 lead on Saturday as Brad Hunt buried a four-on-four chance at 13:50 of the first and the Wolves parlayed that score into a shorthanded Wade Megan breakaway tally in the frame's final minute at 19:24. In the second, Cleveland battled back to draw within a goal at 2-1 when Nick Moutrey finished off a shorthanded feed from Justin Scott at 6:07 for his second tally of the season. Then, at 15:33, Sonny Milano bounced an even-strength score through Chicago net-minder Jordan Binnington's legs from below the goal line to tie the game at two with Daniel Zaar collecting an assist on the play.
In the third, Markus Hannikainen posted what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Monsters at 8:22, a perseverant even-strength marker, his team-leading fifth this season, thanks to visionary feeds from Aaron Palushaj and Alex Broadhurst. Then, with only one second remaining in regulation, Scott buried an empty-net score at 19:59, from Jordan Maletta and Jaime Sifers, to seal a 4-2 victory and a weekend sweep of the Wolves.
Anton Forsberg improved to 5-3-1 between the pipes for Cleveland by virtue of a 16-save performance, while Binnington fell to 3-3-1 in net for Chicago despite stopping 27 of the 30 Monsters shots he faced on Saturday.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Thursday home tilt vs. the Milwaukee Admirals with full coverage, live from The Q, underway at 7:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
