Cleveland Monsters News Release
Despite out-shooting the top team in the Western Conference in each period, the Lake Erie Monsters (22-25-0-5) fell short by a 2-1 score to the Texas Stars (33-16-3-4) Tuesday at Quicken Loans Arena. Garrett Meurs scored the lone goal for the Monsters. The two teams meet again Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. at The Q.
Texas entered the game with the league's top-ranked power play, and the Stars cashed in 41 seconds into their first man-advantage of the game to take a 1-0 lead. Mike Hedden scored from the bottom of the right circle at 15:12 of the opening period, before the Monsters would strike moments later. Garrett Meurs received an outlet pass up the left wing from Michael Schumacher, beat a defender through the left circle in the offensive zone, and made a move to slip the puck past Stars goalie Cristopher Nilstorp. The goal was the sixth of the season for Meurs, and was scored at 18:47 of the first period. Brett Clark also assisted on the goal.
The Stars received the eventual game-winning goal when an airborne puck deflected off Curtis McKenzie at 12:57 of the second period; the goal gave Texas a 2-1 edge.
Nilstorp stopped all 11 Monsters shots in the third period; the Monsters registered 11 shots in each period, but were unable to solve Nilstorp in the second and third frames.
Calvin Pickard suffered the loss in net; he is 12-14-3 after stopping 21 of 23 shots. Nilstorp is 20-12-3 after stopping 32 of 33 Monsters shots.
The Monsters and Stars meet for the second time this season Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
NOTES: Andrew Agozzino's four-game point streak was snapped in the loss; he had two goals and two assists over the streak... Michael Schumacher has points in back-to-back games... Texas was the last team on the Monsters schedule that they had yet to play this season prior to Tuesday's game; the two teams meet three more times... The Monsters are 5-8-0-0 against the West Division, and 3-5-0-1 in February... The Monsters were 0-6 on the power play and Texas was 2-7 with the man-advantage.
