Monsters Fall in Iowa 1-0
January 18, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Cleveland Monsters News Release
Despite a season-high 45 shots on net, the Lake Erie Monsters (17-18-0-3) fell short by a 1-0 score Saturday afternoon to the Iowa Wild (17-16-3-2) at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, Iowa. Calvin Pickard stopped 26 of the 27 shots he saw in net for the Monsters, who have dropped five straight games. The Monsters return to Quicken Loans Arena Thursday at 7:00 PM when they host the Rochester Americans.
Pickard and Iowa goalie John Curry gave fans a goaltenders' duel, as the two were perfect through two periods. After 40 minutes, Pickard had stopped 16 shots, while Curry had turned away 28 Monsters shots.
Warren Peters broke Pickard's shutout bid at 2:13 of the third period when he deflected a Jonathan Blum point shot into the net to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. The one-goal lead held up for Iowa, who leaps past the Monsters in the Western Conference standings. The game was the 38th of 76 for each team, putting each club at the midway point of the American Hockey League schedule.
Pickard stopped 26 of 27 in the loss, and is now 9-9-2. Curry is 3-2-1 for Iowa after stopping 45 shots in his first shutout for the Wild this season.
The Monsters host Rochester at 7:00 PM on Thursday.
