
Monsters Drop Saturday Matinee to Crunch, 5-3

CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Monsters of the American Hockey League were defeated by the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday afternoon at The Q by a final score of 5-3. With the loss, the Monsters drop to 10-8-3-0 overall this season and with 25 points, currently sit alone in third place in the AHL's North Division standings.
Syracuse opened the scoring in the first period with an even-strength tally from Dennis Yan at 1:49 to give the Crunch an early 1-0 lead. Cleveland answered when Sonny Milano scored at 2:28 on feeds from Mark Letestu and Ryan MacInnis to even the score at one apiece. Taylor Raddysh pushed Syracuse back in front, 2-1, at 11:03 of the frame before extending their lead to 3-1 before the end of the period with a five-on-five marker from Yan at 13:26 of the frame. The Monsters cut into the deficit when Doyle Somerby scored his first goal of the season, an even-strength put-back off a rebound at 15:05 on feeds from Eric Robinson and Kole Sherwood to make the score 3-2 entering the first intermission.
In the middle frame, Syracuse increased their lead to 4-2 when Boris Katchouk netted a short-handed goal at 3:16 to give the Crunch a two-goal advantage.
The Monsters trimmed the Syracuse lead to 4-3 when Vitaly Abramov scored at 10:19 of the third period, an even-strength tally from Cleveland blue-liner Gabriel Carlsson and Sam Vigneault. The Crunch closed the scoring for the day when Cory Conacher poked home an empty-net goal to secure a 5-3 win for Syracuse.
Monsters goaltender Jean-Francois Berube stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced in relief of Matiss Kivlenieks to drop to 7-6-2 on the season, while Crunch net-minder Eddie Pasquale stopped 35 of the 38 pucks he faced to improve to 5-2-2 on the year.
