Manitoba Offense Quieter in Loss at San Diego
December 1, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose (10-10-1-0) and San Diego Gulls (8-7-1-1) met up for the second time in three nights with San Diego coming out with a 2-1 win. Looking to bounce back from a 5-1 loss to the Moose on Wednesday, the Gulls came out with an early push in the offensive zone. The pressure from the home side was aided by three power play opportunities in the opening frame, but the Moose penalty kill held the line. Following Manitoba's third kill, Jansen Harkins was able to shovel a loose puck into the San Diego goal to open the scoring with 5:06 left in the period. The lead was short-lived as less than a minute later, Max Jones drove to the front of the Moose net and put back his own rebound to leave the game tied 1-1 after 20 minutes.
The second period saw tempers boil over. In total, the referees assessed 72 minutes in penalties to the clubs across 19 penalties. Three sets of fighting majors were handed out, along with three roughing penalties. Despite all the chances to work on the power play, neither team was able to add to its total on the scoreboard. Eric Comrie had a hand in that, making multiple brilliant saves to keep the Moose on even footing. Just prior to the end of the period, San Diego's Sam Carrick was assessed a match penalty for a check to the head of Manitoba's Kristian Reichel, with most of the penalty carrying over into the final frame.
The Moose power play couldn't cash in on the extended power play opportunity. Comrie continued to give Manitoba a chance to win in the frame, making 14 saves in the final 20 minutes. The Moose were awarded a power play with 6:19 to go, but a giveaway in the offensive zone turned into a shorthanded goal for Joseph Blandisi. That tally held up as the winner as the Moose were unable to find a tying goal with the net empty and a late power play in a 2-1 loss.
