Monsters Cruise to 4-1 Win on Opening Night at the Q

CLEVELAND - In front of 12,791 fans, Cleveland's Lake Erie Monsters, proud affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, defeated the Iowa Wild by a 4-1 final score in the team's 2015-16 home opener on Friday at The Q. With the win, the Monsters improved to 1-1-0-0 overall this season and with two points, currently sit tied for third place in the AHL's Central Division standings.

After a scoreless first period, Michael Keranen made it 1-0 Wild at 3:28 of the middle frame before Kerby Rychel blasted home his first of the season at 7:56 of the second thanks to a deft even-strength T.J. Tynan setup. In the third, the Monsters rattled off three unanswered goals, first from Andrew Bodnarchuk at 7:01, assisted by Rychel and Markus Hannikainen, then a pair of empty-net tallies from Justin Falk and Rychel sealed the deal at 18:36 and 19:45 respectively, with Oliver Bjorkstrand and Michael Chaput collecting assists on Falk's marker.

Lake Erie backstop Anton Forsberg posted his first win of the season thanks to a steady, 31-save performance while Iowa's Jeremy Smith registered the loss despite an impressive 40-save showing.
