Amerks Fall to IceCaps in Return to St. John's
October 16, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(St. John's, NFLD)... The Rochester Americans' first trip back to Newfoundland in over a decade didn't go exactly as planned as the Amerks dropped a 5-2 decision to the St. John's IceCaps in the first game of a weekend set between the new North Division rivals Friday night at Mile One Centre. With the loss, the Amerks fall to 2-1-0-0 on the young season heading into Saturday's rematch against the IceCaps.
Dan Catenacci and Jack Nevins each scored for the Amerks, who returned to 'The Rock' for the first time since the 2004-05 campaign, while Jason Akeson assisted on both goals. Phil Varone and Chad Ruhwedel also earned assists and Linus Ullmark made his second straight start in goal for Rochester, turning aside 29 of 33 shots in the loss.
Sven Andrighetto and Christian Thomas each provided a pair of goals and Bud Holloway finished with a team-high three points (1+2) as the IceCaps also improved to 2-1-0-0 on the season. Charles Hudon and Morgan Ellis also contributed two assists apiece while rookie netminder Zachary Fucale made 31 saves en route to his first career win for St. John's.
Rochester controlled the early stages of the contest, but a turnover along the right wing boards would prove costly as the IceCaps capitalized on the ensuing 3-on-1 fast break just 5:23 in with Andrighetto finishing off a slick passing play for his first of two on the night.
Catenacci evened the score with 4:06 remaining in the first period when his shot from in-between the circles found the upper corner over Fucale's right shoulder to make it a 1-1 affair.
The game wouldn't stay tied for long, though, as St. John's scored twice in the first 5:45 of the second period to claim a 3-1 advantage over the Amerks. Andrighetto ignited a three-goal run for the IceCaps after cleaning up a Hudon rebound and Thomas widened the gap just 2:16 later off a long stretch pass from Mark Barberio, beating Ullmark with a wrist shot from the right circle.
As was the case through the first two periods, St. John's opened the final frame with another goal from Thomas, who swatted a wobbling puck out of midair for his second of the game.
Nevins cut the deficit in half with his second goal in as many games, but an empty-netter from Holloway with 1:42 remaining would be enough to hand Rochester its first loss of the season.
The Amerks and IceCaps are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 17 as the North Division rivals close out the two-game set with another go-around at Mile One Centre. Game time is slated for a 6:00 p.m. ET start and will be carried live on FOX Sports 1280 Rochester.
