Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Detroit Red Wings on Friday assigned defenseman Alexey Marchenko to the Grand Rapids Griffins. In addition, the Griffins have released defenseman Matt Corrente from his professional tryout.
Detroit's ninth choice (205th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Marchenko spent 51 games with Grand Rapids last season and picked up 20 points (3-17-20), 26 penalty minutes and a plus-22 rating. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound defenseman also appeared in 13 regular season games with Detroit in 2014-15, tallying a goal and an assist, before eventually making both his NHL and AHL playoff debuts in the same season. After going scoreless in three games with the Wings during their first-round Stanley Cup Playoffs series against Tampa Bay, Marchenko went on to register four assists in 11 games as Grand Rapids reached the Western Conference Finals versus Utica.
Now entering his third season with the Griffins, the Moscow, Russia, native has compiled six goals and 32 assists in 100 AHL games since his North American debut in 2013-14.
The 6-foot, 205-pound Corrente split last season between the Syracuse Crunch (2-6-8, 48 GP, 101 PIM) and San Antonio Rampage (1-4-5, 10 GP, 43 PIM). Originally selected by the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft (30th overall), Corrente has played 293 career games in the AHL between the Lowell Devils, Albany Devils, Charlotte Checkers, Crunch and Rampage. He also logged 34 career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils between 2009-11, picking up six assists and 68 PIM.
The Griffins will take flight on the home portion of their 20th anniversary season tonight at 7 p.m. at Van Andel Arena against the San Antonio Rampage, before hosting a rematch against San Antonio the following night at the same time.
