Manchester Monarchs News Release
Manchester, NH -- The Manchester Monarchs edged out the Hartford Wolf Pack 8-7 in a scoring bananza Friday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena before a crowd of 8,213. Manchester once again was strong on the power play, converting on four of 10 chances and adding a short-handed tally in the victory.
Hartford's John Tripp started off the scoring with his first goal of the night, an unassisted tally right off the opening face-off.
But Manchester answered less than four minutes later when defenseman Joe Corvo's off-balance shot sneaked its way by Pack goalie Scott Meyer. Rookie Mike Cammalleri and defenseman Mike Pudlick were given assists on the power play goal.
The Monarchs upped their lead to 2-1 at 10:26 of the first when captain Dane Jackson buried the rebound of a shot by center Chris Schmidt. They added a third tally at 12:46 when center Yannick Lehoux netted his fourth of the season, the second Monarchs power play goal of the stanza. Jared Aulin brought the puck into the zone before passing it to Pavel Rosa in front of the net. Rosa then dished the puck to Lehoux, who deked around his defender and slid the puck in past Meyer in the right corner.
Hartford answered with three straight tallies by Gordie Dwyer, Tomas Kloucek, and Dixon Ward respectively to end the first stanza with a 4-3 advantage.
Manchester's Travis Scott was pulled in favor of Cristobal Huet at the start of the second period, and veteran winger Steve Heinze tied things at 4-4 with a power play tally to start the second period scoring. Cammalleri and winger Eric Healey assisted.
Hartford answered again on a power play tally by Joel Bouchard, who was assisted by former Monarch Ted Donato. Cammalleri then scored a short-handed goal after a great effort by Heinze breaking into the zone. Center Steve Kelly added yet another power play tally at 13:55 to give the Monarchs the 6-5 advantage, forcing Meyer from the game in favor of Jason LaBarbera.
Manchester started the third period strong with a goal from Chris Schmidt and Scott Barney's eventual game-winner, both coming in the first two minutes of the third frame. Hartford tried to rally with Tripp's second and third goals of the night, but Huet held strong in net to deny the comeback.
Huet finished the game with 11 saves on 14 shots while LaBarbera suffered the loss with 10 saves on 13 shots.
Manchester travels to the Cumberland County Civic Center Saturday for a contest against the Portland Pirates. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
