Manchester Monarchs News Release
Los Angeles, CA- The Los Angeles Kings (NHL) have reassigned left wing Derek Bekar (Burnaby, BC) to the Manchester Monarchs (AHL). Kings senior vice president/general manger Dave Taylor made the announcement on Tuesday.
Bekar, 27, led the Monarchs with 27 goals last year, and his 47 points (27-20=47) in 74 games ranked third on the squad. The former University of New Hampshire standout opened the 2002-03 season with the Kings, scoring no points while appearing in four games and registering a minus-1 plus/minus rating.
Bekar, selected by the St. Louis Blues (NHL) in the eighth round (205 overall) of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft, began his professional career with the Worcester IceCats (AHL) during the 1998-99 season. His rookie campaign included 16 goals, 20 assists, and 36 points in 51 games. Bekar's 1999-00 season was even more productive, as the 6-foot-3, 197-pound winger amassed 21 goals, 19 assists, and 40 points in 71 games with the IceCats. His play also earned him a brief one-game promotion with the Blues. Bekar split time with the IceCats and the Portland Pirates (AHL) during the 2000-01 season, totaling 24 goals, 18 assists, and 42 points in 76 games.
Bekar scored 65 goals, 67 assists, and 132 points in 108 career games at UNH.
The Monarchs (2-1-1-0), fresh off Saturday's 3-2 win at Hartford against the Wolf Pack, return to AHL action on Wednesday, October 23 when they welcome the Springfield Falcons to the Verizon Wireless Arena. The Monarchs also earned a 3-3 tie with the Portland Pirates Friday at the Verizon as defenseman Joe Corvo's goal tied the game with just 37 seconds left in regulation.
Don't miss a second of the action this season! Call (603) 626-7825 and ask for an account executive for information on season tickets. Flex packs, 10-game packs, and half-season ticket packages are also available and reservations are currently being taken for party suites and group packages.
