Portland, ME - Rookie Scott Barney scored a power play goal at the 5:00 mark of the overtime period to boost the Manchester Monarchs to a 4-3 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine Saturday night. The goal was Barney's third game-winner of the season, and it helped extend Manchester's unbeaten streak to six games. The North Division leading Monarchs also continued their domination with the man-advantage, scoring two power play goals in the game.

"He's getting better and better every game," said Monarchs head coach Bruce Boudreau of Barney. "He's a big strong kid. L.A. was really impressed with him and here he's just getting better."

Portland started off the scoring 8:37 into the first period when Roman Tvrdon beat Manchester netminder Travis Scott. But the Monarchs answered on a goal from winger Derek Bekar, who scored 35 points in 61 games for Portland (2000-01 season) before coming to Manchester last season. Rookie Jared Aulin assisted on the play at 14:43 of the first.

The Monarchs took the lead early in the second period when veteran winger Steve Heinze netted his first goal of the night on the power play. The tally came just 1:29 into the middle frame. Assisting on the play were defenseman Joe Corvo, who has scored at least one point in every game this season, and Aulin.

Portland stormed back with two goals in the second to go into the final period with a 3-2 lead. Graham Mink netted a power play goal at 2:48 while Trent Whitfield scored the go-ahead goal at the nine minute mark.

With less than two minutes to play in the contest, Heinze struck again to tie things up at 3-3 and force an overtime. Heinze's fourth goal of the season was assisted by rookie center Mike Cammalleri and defenseman Jason Holland at 18:19.

Barney's overtime winner at 5:00 of the extra frame was assisted on by Heinze and center Steve Kelly.

The Monarchs outshot Portland 45-to-40. Scott earned the win with 37 saves.

"We're finding different ways to win," Boudreau said. "We've won with playing great defensively, we've won playing bad defensively, we've won on the power play, we've won with overtime. Tonight we were behind for two periods and we came back to win."

Manchester next battles the Worcester IceCats at the Centrum Centre in Worcester, MA on Friday, November 1. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
