LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
vs. Springfield (3/9): Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff recorded his first shutout of the season as the Manchester Monarchs blanked the Springfield Falcons, 3-0, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. The Monarchs registered goals from right wing Brandon Kozun, right wing Stefan Legein and defenseman and Patrick Mullen. Zatkoff (17-13-1) earned his 17th win stopping all 28 shots faced. Falcons netminder Paul Dainton (9-8-0) took his eighth loss of the season stopping 23 saves on 26 shots. Manchester went 0-for-3 on the power play. Springfield was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
@ Portland (3/10): Center Justin Azevedo led the Manchester Monarchs with five points and a franchise record four goals in a 5-2 victory over the Portland Pirates at the Cumberland County Civic Arena on Saturday night. Manchester also received a goal from right wing Stefan Legein. Portland recorded goals from left wing Evan Bloodoff and right wing Brett Hextall. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (14-15-2) earned his 14th victory stopping 40-of-42 shots. Portland netminder Justin Pogge (13-13-3) took his 13th loss of the season stopping 12 saves on 17 shots. Manchester went 1-for-1 on the power play. Portland was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
vs. Connecticut (3/11): The Manchester Monarchs entered the final frame knotted at 2-2 but fell victim to three third period tallies in a 5-3 defeat to the Connecticut Whale at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Monarchs notched goal from left wing Richard Clune, defenseman Thomas Hickey and right wing Trent Hunter. Connecticut scored goals from center Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, right wing Andreas Thursson, defenseman Wade Redden and center Casey Wellman (two). Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff (17-14-1) took his 14th loss of the season stopping 27-of-31 shots. Whale goaltender Chad Johnson (20-13-5) earned his 20th victory of the season making 34 saves on 37 shots. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Connecticut was also 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (31-29-0-3) sit in second place in the Atlantic Division with 65 points. The St. John's IceCaps (37-15-5-2) are in first place in the division with 81 points. The Worcester Sharks (26-23-4-7) are in third place in the division with 63 points. The Portland Pirates (28-27-3-3) sit in fourth place in the division with 62 points. The Providence Bruins (27-29-3-4) are in fifth place in the division with 61 points.
It is a tight playoff race for the playoffs as the top eight teams from each conference will make the 2012 Calder Cup Playoffs. The Monarchs enter the week ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference with the Albany Devils (27-24-6-4) sitting in eighth place with 64 points. The Sharks sit in ninth place with 63 points.
The Monarchs have 13 games remaining in the regular season, including four home games.
The Monarchs penalty kill is 17-for-18 in their last five games.
At the Verizon Wireless Arena this season, Manchester owns a 17-16-0-1 record.
This season, the Monarchs are 20-7-0-3 in games that have been decided by one goal.

Azevedo leads the Monarchs with 19 goals tallied this season.
Azevedo set a Monarchs all-time record with four goals in a game on Saturday, March 10 in a 5-2 victory over the Pirates.
Azevedo is the third player in franchise history to record a five point (4-1=5) game as he collected four goals and one assist in the Monarchs 5-2 win over Portland on Saturday, March 10.
Azevedo ranks fifth on the Monarchs all-time assist list (89) and is ranked sixth on the Monarchs all-time points list (152) and is tied for seventh place on the Monarchs all-time goals scored list with 63.
Center Marc-Andre Cliche (16-18=34) is ranked fourth on the team with 16 goals.
Cliche is ranked fourth on the Monarchs with 34 points.
Cliche's five game-winning goals lead the team and are tied for 10th most in the league.
Cliche is 6-for-7 in the shootout this season to lead all Monarchs players.
Cliche is tied for fourth place on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 273 games and is tied for ninth place on the Monarchs all- time goals scored list with 57 tallies.
Defenseman Patrick Mullen (8-25=33) is in fifth place on the Monarchs with 33 points Mullen leads all Monarchs defensemen with eight goals, 25 assists and 33 points this season.
Mullen's 25 assists rank first on the team.
Left wing Dwight King (11-18=29) is ranked sixth on the Monarchs with 29 points.
King was recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on Friday, February 10 and made his season debut against the New York Islanders on Saturday, February 11.
King scored his first NHL goal in a 4-2 victory against the Dallas Stars on Sunday, February 12.
King has recorded eight points (3-5=8) in 20 career NHL contests with his first career multi-point game (1-1=2) coming on Sunday, February 12.
King is tied with Cliche for sixth place on the Monarchs with 18 assists each.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey (3-21$) is tied with defenseman David Kolomatis (4-20$) for seventh place on the Monarchs with 24 points each. Hickey is second on the team with 21 assists this season.
Hickey is tied with Kolomatis for second place amongst Monarchs defensemen with 24 points each.
Hickey leads the Monarchs with a plus/minus rating of plus-13. Kolomatis has 10 assists in his last 11 games.
Right wing Jordan Nolan (9-13=22) is tied with center Robbie Czarnik (8-14=22) and defenseman Jake Muzzin (5-17=22) for ninth on the Monarchs with 22 points each.
Nolan's 119 penalty minutes rank third on the Monarchs.
Nolan was recalled by the Kings on Friday, February 10.
Nolan made his NHL debut against the Islanders on Saturday, February 11.
Nolan scored his first professional goal in a 4-2 victory against the Stars on Sunday, February 12. The tally was also the game-winning goal.
Nolan has three points (2-1=3) and 21 penalty minutes in 13 games with the Kings this season.
Muzzin had a four-game assist streak snapped in the Monarchs 5-3 defeat to the Connecticut Whale on Sunday, March 11.
Czarnik is in second place on the Monarchs with a plus-9 rating.
With a goal and an assist in the Monarchs victory over the Bruins on Sunday, February 26, Muzzin set a career-high with his 19th point on the season. Muzzin now has a career best 22 points this season.
Right wing Stefan Legein (11-6=17) is tied with defenseman Andrew Campbell (2-15=17) for 12th place on the Monarchs with 17 points each.
Legein has three goals and an assist for four points in his last five games.
Campbell ranks second on the Monarchs all-time games played list with 285 games and is one of two players (Hickey) to appear in all 63 games for the Monarchs this season.
Center Andrei Loktionov (3-13=16) is in 14th place on the Monarchs with 16 points.
Loktionov returned to Manchester on Friday, February 24. Loktionov recorded seven points (3-4=7) and two penalty minutes in 39 games with Kings this season.
In 59 career games with the Kings, Loktionov has 14 points (7-7=14) and four penalty minutes.
Left wing Richard Clune (5-5=10) leads the team and is in third place in the AHL with 192 penalty minutes.
Defenseman Slava Voynov (2-2=4) returned to Manchester on Friday, February 10. Voynov was originally recalled to the Kings on November 15. In 41 games with Los Angeles this season, Voynov has 15 points (5-10=14) and 10 penalty minutes.
Voynov was recalled by the Kings on Friday, February 24.
Right wing Justin Johnson (1-2=3) is ranked second on the team and is in fifth place in the league with 172 penalty minutes.
Goaltender Martin Jones owns a 14-15-2 record, a 2.73 goals-against-average and a .916 save percentage in 34 games for the Monarchs.
Monarchs netminder Jeff Zatkoff has registered a record of 17-14-1, a 2.63 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage in 37 games.
Zatkoff made 28 saves in his first shutout of the season on Friday, March 9 in a 5-2 victory against the Springfield Falcons.
Zatkoff's 3-1 shootout record is ranked 11th in the AHL.
