St. John's IceCaps News Release

The St. John's IceCaps helped Special Olympics kick off their 2012 fundraising drive Sunday with a $20,000 donation.

IceCaps President and CEO Danny Williams made the announcement during a special luncheon at the Convention Centre Sunday afternoon that also featured Newfoundland and Labrador Special Olympics chairman Kevin Dunphy.

Mr. Williams was joined at the event by the entire St. John's IceCaps team, including coach Keith McCambridge.

Newfoundland and Labrador Special Olympics team participated in the 2012 Special Olympic National Winter Games in St. Albert, Alberta from February 28-March 3. The team performed extremely well, bringing home 21 medals.

"The IceCaps Cares and Williams Family Foundation are so incredibly proud of the extraordinary talent and enthusiasm of our Special Olympic team," said Mr. Williams. "Having recently won 21 medals at the national Special Olympics, these athletes have demonstrated once again what outstanding competitors they are and they have reminded us of why it is so important to have the support of the community.

"We are so pleased to contribute $20,000 to kick-start their fundraising campaign for the upcoming Special Olympics Festival. On behalf of the IceCaps players and our entire organization, I want to congratulate all of these wonderful athletes and on their achievements. They are an inspiration to us all on what determination, talent and pride can accomplish."

Approximately 65 Special Olympic athletes were in attendance at the event, as were a number of board members, representatives from St. John's Sports and Entertainment as well as city council.

Mr. Dunphy expressed great thanks for the donation from IceCaps Care and the Williams Family Foundation.

"Without generous community partners like the IceCaps, Special Olympics would not be able to provide quality programming to over 600 athletes in 13 communities in Newfoundland and Labrador," said Mr. Dunphy. "The Special Olympics were proud to be a part of such an event and feel that this is another example of how the IceCaps are being committed to the community."

The IceCaps Care Foundation is pleased to offer its support through in-kind donations or financial grants to registered charitable organizations which focus their activities on educational initiatives, health and wellness or youth programs.
