
Worcester Sharks Hit 100 Fighting Majors But Still Looking for Scoring Touch

Shark Snap Shot:
The Worcester Sharks chomped two out of a possible eight points in four home games last week. The Sharks began their five game home stand at the DCU Center on Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to the Sound Tigers. Worcester grabbed a 6-4 win over the Pirates on Friday, were shutout at home for the first time in a 2-0 loss to the Bruins on Saturday, and finished off the rough week with a 4-1 loss to the Phantoms on Sunday at the DCU Center.
The Worcester Sharks player of the week nominee was defenseman Matt Pelech. Matt blocked several shots, threw some big time checks, was +4, and added an assist in four games last week.
If the playoffs were to start today, the Sharks would not participate. The Sharks are currently in 9th place in the Eastern Conference; just one point behind the 8th place Devils and two points behind the 7th place Monarchs.

The Sharks currently sit in 3rd place in the Atlantic Division, 18 points behind the first place St. John's IceCaps, two points behind the 2nd place Monarchs, and one point ahead of the 4th place Pirates, and two points ahead of the 5th place Bruins.
The Sharks currently have 16 games remaining (9 home, 7 away) in their regular season schedule and are out of a playoff spot by 1 point with one game in hand on the Albany Devils.

Tough guy Jimmy Bonneau is one fight away from tying Frazer McLaren's team record of 21 fighting majors (2008-09) in a season.
Andover, MA native and BU alum, John McCarthy leads the Worcester Sharks with 36 points (15-21-36) in 49 games this season. Brandon Mashinter also has 15 goals.
The Sharks finish up their five game home stand (1-3-0-0) on Friday vs. the Bruins on Heroes Night to benefit the Jon Davies Children's Fund. Before the game, the Sharks will be hosting their 2nd annual job fair from 1-5pm (more info HERE) and the Worcester Police and Fire Department will take on the Connecticut Fire Department at 5pm. 3.6.12 - Worcester 2 - Bridgeport 3 - L - DCU Center
Brandon Mashinter scored twice for Worcester, but the Sound Tigers scored three power play goals as the Sharks dropped game 1 of a five game home stand by the score of 3-2 to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Tuesday night at the DCU Center in Worcester. Harri Sateri made 22 saves in the loss and John McCarthy added two assists as the Sharks dropped to .500 on home ice. The Sharks went 0-for-6 on the power play but remained in the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
3.9.12 - Worcester 6 - Portland 4 - W - DCU Center
11 different players recorded at least one point for the Sharks including goaltender Tyson Sexsmith (assist) as the Sharks rolled to a 6-4 victory over the Portland Pirates at DCU Center on Friday evening.
Tim Kennedy (1-2-3) and John McCarthy (1-2-3) each had three points and Brandon Mashinter extended his point streak to five games (4-3-7) with his 15th goal and an assist as the Sharks scored six goals for the first time since the home opener vs. the Devils on Oct 15. Tyson Sexsmith picked up his 12th win of the season with 38 saves and Jimmy Bonneau picked up his team leading 20th fighting major in the victory.
3.10.12 - Worcester 0 - Providence 2 - L - DCU Center
On a night the Sharks were honoring one of their most gifted goal scorers in franchise history; Logan Couture, with a bobble head doll, Bruins netminder Michael Hutchinson made 34 saves as the Sharks lost to the Providence Bruins 2-0 in front of 6,204 fans at the DCU Center on Saturday night. Tyson Sexsmith was the tough luck loser with 28 saves in net for Worcester as the Sharks fell to .500 at home. The Sharks did pick up their 99th and 100th fighting major penalties in the tough loss to the Bruins.
3.11.12 - Worcester 1 - Adirondack 4 - L - DCU Center
Jack Combs scored his 13th goal of the season, the only strike on 41 shots on goal on Adirondack netminder Michael Leighton as the Sharks lost to the Phantom 4-1 at the DCU Center on Sunday afternoon. The Sharks dropped below .500 on home ice with the loss (13-14-0-2) and Harri Sateri made 32 saves in net in a game that saw only three minor penalties.
Sharks in the Atlantic: The Sharks are swimming in 3rd place with 63 points (26-23-4-7) in the Atlantic Division through 60 games, which is 18 points behind the first place St. John's IceCaps (59gp), two points behind the 2nd place Manchester Monarchs (63gp) and one point ahead of the 4th place Portland Pirates (61gp). The Sharks have a two point edge over the 5th place Bruins (61pts in 63gp), to round out a very choppy Atlantic Division.

In Coach Sommer's first AHL victory.... The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17th 1998. Coincidentally, Assistant Coach David Cunniff recorded an assist as a member of the River Rats in the hockey game.
Assistant Coach David Cunniff has joined Coach Sommer in 350 of the 504 victories (69%).
ECHL... Coach Sommer also has 176 wins in the ECHL coaching in five seasons with Roanoke Valley and Richmond.

AWARDS...Tommy Wingels was selected as the Reebok/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Dec. 18, 2011. In four games last week Wingels recorded four goals, two assists and a plus-6 rating as the Sharks closed out a seven-game road swing having earned 11 of a possible 14 standings points. Wingels recorded 10 points (seven goals, three assists), including four game-winning goals, and a plus-11 rating during the Sharks' seven-game road stretch from Dec. 4-18, helping Worcester to a 5-1-0-1 mark in that time.
Tommy Wingels take 2... Tommy Wingels became just the third Worcester Sharks player in franchise history to record 10 goals in a month (joining Mathieu Darche and Graham Mink). Tommy finished the month of December with 10 goals, three assists, and +5 in 14 games. Wingels recorded four game winning goals in the month of December and fired 53 shots on goal. Tommy was rewarded with a NHL call up to San Jose on Jan 4 and scored his first NHL goal on Jan 15 at Chicago.

TRADE!... The San Jose Sharks traded Worcester Sharks defenseman Sean Sullivan to Florida in exchange for center Tim Kennedy on Jan 26. Sullivan had suited up in 105 Worcester Sharks games and compiled 59 points (17-42-59) and 53 penalty minutes. Kennedy brings 112 NHL games of experience, was a National Champion with Michigan State in 2007, and was on the AHL All Rookie Team in 2008-09 with the Portland Pirates. Tim has 14 points (5-9-14) in 15gp with Worcester.
TRADE 2!... The San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche agreed to a trade on Feb 27 sending Jamie McGinn, Mike Connolly, and Michael Sgarbossa to Colorado in exchange for Daniel Winnik, T.J. Galiardi and a 7th round pick.
Loaned!... Worcester Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock was loaned to the Peoria Rivermen (AHL) on March 3. Stalock posted a 1-1-0 record with a 2.51 GAA and a .909 save % with Worcester this season. The 24-year-old native of South St. Paul, MN had a 5-1-0 record in six starts for the Stockton Thunder along with a 2.83GAA and a .914 save percentage before his call up to Worcester on Feb 13. The Worcester Sharks Team MVP during the 2009-10 season, Stalock has compiled a 59-37-6 all-time record with the Worcester Sharks and a 1-0-0 career record with the San Jose Sharks. Before his 2-1 victory over the Springfield Falcons on Feb 19, 2012, Stalock had not played a game with Worcester since a season ending injury on Feb 4, 2011 vs. the Manchester Monarchs. Alex Stalock was named to the 2009-10 AHL-All Rookie Team and an AHL All-Star in 2010 with Worcester. The Sharks currently has All-Star Tyson Sexsmith and rookie Harri Sateri on their roster as the Sharks continue to battle for a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. Stalock is 1-0-0 with Peoria.

The Sharks embark on their 2nd straight 3-in-3 weekend with two promotions packed games at the DCU Center!
On Friday, kick off the weekend with a $2-$2-$2 Friday ($2 hot dogs, popcorn, and soda) as the Sharks host the Providence Bruins at 7:30pm on Heroes Night presented by Ecotarium as the Sharks host a benefit for the Jon Davies Children's Fund. The Sharks will honor local heroes throughout the game and a class of U.S. Army recruits will be sworn in on the ice after the game. Before the game, the Sharks will be hosting their 2nd annual job fair from 1-5pm (more info HERE) and the Worcester Police and Fire Department will take on the Connecticut Fire Department at 5pm. $9 tickets for college students with a valid student ID as well as a family fun pack for four costing only $74 (includes tickets, hot dogs and sodas!). Charter TV3 will have a live broadcast of the Sharks vs. Bruins game on Friday night!
Saturday night, the Sharks travel to Wilkes-Barre / Scranton, PA to visit the Penguins for a 7:05pm start!
