Manchester Monarchs News Release
LAST WEEK ¬â¢S HIGHLIGHTS
At Springfield (2/18): Defenseman David Savard scored 3:13 into overtime as the Manchester Monarchs comeback fell short in a 5-4 overtime loss to the Springfield Falcons at the MassMutual Center on Friday night. Center Oscar Moller, left wing Bud Holloway, right wing Brandon Kozun and left wing Dwight King scored for the Monarchs. The Falcons collected goals from left wings Dane Byers, Nikita Filatov and Maksim Mayorov as well as Savard in regulation. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (19-7-1) took his seventh loss of the season, stopping all eight shots he faced in regulations and 1-of-2 shots in overtime. Manchester ¬â¢s netminder Jeff Zatkoff (13-11-4) stopped 11-of-15 shots through two periods of play. Falcons goaltender Gustaf Wesslau (11-11-1) earned his 11th win of the season with 31 saves on 35 shots through regulation and overtime. Manchester was 0-for-6 on the power play. Springfield was 1-for-7 with the man advantage.
Vs. Portland (2/19): Left wing Bud Holloway recorded a goal and two assists as the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Portland Pirates by a 5-4 score at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday night. Left wings Ray Kaunisto, Dwight King and Richard Clune joined defenseman Andrew Campbell and Holloway on the Monarchs scoreboard. Center Luke Adam (two), left wing Jacob Legace and defenseman T.J. Brennan lit the lamp for the Pirates. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones (20-7-1) won his 20th game of the season, stopping 23-of-27 shots on goal. Pirates netminder David Leggio (15-4-0) halted 16-of-20 shots on net before yielding to goaltender Jhonas Enroth (18-15-2), who collected the loss while saving 12-of-13 shots on goal. Manchester was 0-for-4 on the power play. Portland was also 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
At Bridgeport (2/20): Center David Ullstrom recorded a hat trick as the Manchester Monarchs fell to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers by a 4-2 score at the Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard on Sunday afternoon. Left wing Dwight King and right wing Brandon Kozun scored for the Monarchs. Left wing Brandon Svendsen added to Ullstrom ¬â¢s hat trick to give the Sound Tigers four goals in the game. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (13-12-1) collects his 12th loss of the season, stopping 13-of-16 shots on goal. Sound Tigers Mikko Koskinen (6-15-1) earned his sixth victory of the season, halting 20-of-22 shots on net. Manchester was 1-for-5 on the power play. Bridgeport converted on their lone power play opportunity of the game.
MONARCHS NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (34-18-2-5, 75 points) have a three point lead over the Portland Pirates (33-16-4-2, 72 points) for first place in the Atlantic Division but the Pirates have played four less games than the Monarchs thus far this season. The Connecticut Whale (27-22-2-6, 62 points) and the Worcester Sharks (26-20-3-6, 61 points) are fighting for third place in the Division with only one point separating each other. The Springfield Falcons (27-25-1-3, 58 points) are close behind with 58 points, good for fifth place. The Providence Bruins (25-28-3-2, 55 points) sit in sixth place with 55 points and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (20-29-3-4, 47 points) bring up the rear with 47 points.
Manchester ¬â¢s power play is ranked 12th in the AHL as they have scored 52 goals on 282 opportunities for an 18.4% conversion rate. On the penalty kill, the Monarchs are ranked seventh in the league as they have given up 40 goals when they have been down a man. They have been shorthanded 263 times this season and have an 84.8% penalty kill rating.
Manchester ¬â¢s home power play unit ranks seventh overall out of 30 AHL teams, scoring 34 goals with the man advantage in 155 opportunities for a 21.9% conversion rate.
The Monarchs have earned at least a point in 11 of their last 13 games with a record of 7-2-1-3.
Left wing Bud Holloway (19-25=44) leads the Monarchs in points with 44 to his credit.
Holloway has recorded seven points (2-5=7) in his last five games.
Holloway ¬â¢s 144 shots on goal lead the team and his 19 goals this season are ranked second on the Monarchs roster.
Holloway combined with right wing Brandon Kozun (16-15=31) to score two goals 25 seconds apart Friday night against the Falcons, the fastest two goals between two Monarchs players this season.
Center Oscar Moller (15-25=40) is tied with defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (12-28=40) for second place on the Monarchs.
Moller has collected six points (2-4=6) in his last five games.
With a goal on Friday against the Falcons, Moller has tied his career-high for goals at the AHL level with 15 tallies in one season.
Moller ¬â¢s 15 goals on the season are ranked fourth on the Monarchs this season.
Overall, Moller has four game-winning goals this season which ties him for 13th place in the AHL.
Voynov ¬â¢s 40 points tie him for first overall in the AHL among blueliners with Portland defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani. Voynov ¬â¢s 12 goals lead the league among defensemen and his six power play goals place him in a tie for third in the league among defensemen.
Named to his second consecutive AHL All-Star game, Voynov participated in the 2011 Reese ¬â¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, claiming victory in the Reebok Fastest Skater event with a time of 14.197 seconds. Voynov also appeared in the AHL All-Star Game at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross on Monday, January 31 at Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Voynov assisted on one of the Eastern Conference ¬â¢s goals on their way to the 11-8 victory.
Left wing Dwight King (20-18=38) places fourth on the Monarchs in points with 38
King is currently on a five-game goal scoring and point streaks with six goals and one assist for seven points (6-1=7) since February 12.
King leads the Monarchs in goal scoring with 20 tallies.
Center Justin Azevedo (13-22=38) has six points (1-5) in his last five games, including a three game assist streak (0-5=5).
Azevedo is ranked fifth on the Monarchs with 38 points.
Azevedo and Kozun are tied for the Monarchs team lead with five game-winning goals and are tied for sixth overall in the AHL in the same category.
With an assist in Saturday ¬â¢s game against Portland, center Corey Elkins (14-18=32) ranks sixth on the team.
Centers Marc-Andre Cliche (14-17=31) and Andrei Loktionov (8-23=31) are tied with Kozun for seventh place on the Monarchs in scoring with 31 points.
Cliche, with 14 goals, has already eclipsed his previous career-highs of 11 goals, set in both the 2007-08 and the 2009-10 Monarchs seasons.
Loktionov, recalled by the Los Angeles Kings on January 20, returned to the Monarchs line-up on Sunday.
Loktionov recorded seven points (4-3=7) and two penalty minutes in 19 games with the Kings this season.
Loktionov leads the Monarchs in the plus/minus category with a plus-15.
Left wing David Meckler (14-11=25) is tied with Cliche and Elkins for fourth place on the Monarchs in goal scoring with 14 tallies.
Defenseman Thomas Hickey (6-16=22) is tied with Voynov for second overall on the Monarchs with a plus-14 rating.
Left wing Richard Clune ¬â¢s 202 penalty minutes places him third overall in the league in the same category.
Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has a record of 13-12-4 with a 3.03 goals-against-average and a .899 save percentage in 32 games this season.
Netminder Martin Jones has played in 31 games with the Monarchs and has collected a record of 20-7-1 with a 2.25 goals-against-average and a .926 save percentage.
Alongside Voynov, Jones was a Monarchs representative at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Capital BlueCross. Jones participated in the 2011 Reese ¬â¢s AHL All-Star Skills Competition, helping the Eastern Conference to a 19-7 Skills Competition victory.
Jones held opposing shooters scoreless in the Reese ¬â¢s Pass and Score event, making three saves. Jones only allowed 1-of-6 shooters to score during the Panasonic Breakaway Relay, as Milwaukee left wing Linus Klasen scored on Jones following two spins between the hashmarks.
Jones also played in the first 30-plus minutes of the contest, making 15 saves on 19 shots on goal, combining with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins netminder John Curry to lead the Eastern Conference All-Stars to an 11-8 victory over their counterparts from the Western Conference.
