Legein Returned to Adirondack

The Adirondack Phantoms, proud AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, today were returned 5-10, 185 lb forward Stefan Legein from the Greenville Road Warriors of the ECHL.

In two games with the Road Warriors, Legein was held scoreless.

This season with the Phantoms, Legein has registered 5 goals and 13 points in 31 games. Last season with Adirondack, he ranked 2nd on the team in goals (24) and 5th on the team in points (34) in 71 games.

Three Game Weekend Begins in Montreal

Friday, February 25 - 7:30 p.m. - Bell Centre -Montreal, PQ

@ Hamilton Bulldogs (30-20-1-4, 65 pts)

3rd Place in North Division, Western Conference

This will be the fourth and final meeting between the Phantoms and Bulldogs this season. Hamilton leads the season series 2-1. Hamilton has slipped as of late as forwards Max Pacioretty, David Desharnias and Ryan White continue to play with their NHL affiliate, the Montreal Canadiens. The Bulldogs are 3-7-0-0 in their last ten but are currently on a two-game winning streak. Forward J.T. Wyman leads the Bulldogs in goals (12) in 55 games while Ben Maxwell has a team high 28 assists and 39 points in 46 games this season. Goaltender Curtis Sanford, who has spent time in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues and Vancouver Canucks, ranks 2nd in the AHL in wins (21), GAA (1.92) and save percentage (.931). This season against Adirondack, Sanford is 1-1-0 with a .915 save percentage while backup Robert Mayer is 1-0-0 with a .875 save percentage (he won 4-3 decision in a shootout back on Jan.22 at the Glens Falls Civic Center). On special teams, the Bulldogs are ranked 5th on the power play (20.5%) and 8th on the penalty kill (84.5%).

Saturday, February 26 - 7:00 p.m. - Glens Falls Civic Center - Glens Falls, NY

vs. Worcester Sharks (26-20-3-6, 61 pts)

4th Place in Atlantic Division, Eastern Conference

This is the first of two meetings between the Phantoms and Shark this season. Adirondack will travel to Worcester later on this season to take on the AHL affiliate of the San Jose Sharks. The Shark are 4th in the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference but trail the Binghamton Senators and the Norfolk Admirals for the fourth and final playoff spot. Worcester is 6-2-1-1 in their last ten and are on a 2-game point streak. Michael Swift, the ex-Albany Devil and Jonathon Cheechoo, who has spent time in the NHL with the San Jose Sharks and the Ottawa Senators in the past, have a team-high 17 goals while Cheechoo has 27 assists and 41 points in 51 games. Goaltender Alex Stalock has a 19-17-4 record with a 2.63 GAA and .907 save percentage. The Shark are 15th on the power play converting 17.7 % of the time while they are 26th on the penalty kill stopping opponents 78.0 % of the time.

Tied-4th Place in Eastern Division, Eastern Conference

This will be the sixth of eight meetings between the Phantoms and Senators this season. Binghamton leads the season series 4-1 and have outscored Adirondack 26-12 in those games. Binghamton is currently on a 8-game point streak (7-0-1) and are (7-2-1) in their last ten. Forwards Bobby Butler, Erik Condra, and Colin Greening remain in Ottawa along with rookie goaltender Robin Lehner. Corey Locke has a team-high and league-high in assists (53) and points (71) in 50 games. Goaltenders Barry Brust is 21-12-1 with a 2.53 GAA and .927 save percentage while Mike Brodeur is 2-5-0 with a 3.05 GAA and .896 save percentage. Binghamton leads the league on the power play converting 23.1 % of the time and are ranked 20th on the penalty kill (81.9%).

Week 19 Game Results

February 16, 2011 - Syracuse 2 @ Adirondack 4

Adirondack scored three goals in the final six minutes of regulation for another dramatic victory on Wednesday night against the Syracuse Crunch. Logan Stephenson (1st) tied the game at 2-2 with 5:17 remaining and then Rob Bordson (5th) netted the game-winner against his former team with 3:07 left to ignite the crowd at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Eric Wellwood opened the scoring for Adirondack 18:37 into the first period as he beat Crunch goaltender J.P. Levasseur from a sharp angle in the right-wing corner to score his eleventh goal of the year. Logan Stephenson made a great play in the defensive zone to win a 1-on-1 battle and then send a cross-ice feed the streaking Wellwood who snuck it in from the tough angle while Denis Hamel was crashing into the slot. Adirondack led 1-0 until ex-Adirondack Phantom, Patrick Maroon, scored his 15th of the year and 10th with Syracuse in the closing minute of the second period. Syracuse would take a 2-1 lead shorthanded early in the 3rd period on a Phantoms giveaway, which led to Nicolas Deschamps 10th goal of the season. The Crunch led late into the third until Adirondack's late game heroics yet again.Johan Backlund earned his seventh win of the year making 29 saves while counterpart J.P. Levasseur stopped 23 shots as he recorded his sixth loss of the season against Adirondack.

February 18, 2011 - Connecticut 2 @ Adirondack 1 (SO)

Mike Testwuide (7th) scored 6:43 into the second period to give the Phantoms a 1-0 lead but Connecticut stormed back late in the third with a goal by Kris Newbury, his 11th of the season, with 2:49 remaining to tie the game at 1-1. Adirondack was able to preserve the one standings point by killing off a Whale 5-on-3 power play in the final minute of regulation. With Walker sitting out for holding and Kalinski called for tripping, the Phantoms P.K. came through again. The Whale would continue their 4-on-3 power play in overtime. Their top scorer, Jeremy Williams, hit the post but play continued and Adirondack later found themselves on the power play in a wild extra stanza. The Phantoms were not able to get the game-winner while on the man-advantage and the game went to a shootout. Tim Kennedy and Kris Newbury would score in the shootout to preserve the victory for the Whale. Adirondack would extend their point streak to five games (3-0-2) though.

February 19, 2011 - Charlotte 3 @ Adirondack 2 (SO)

The Adirondack Phantoms extended their point streak to six games (3-0-3) but for the second consecutive night were defeated in the shootout, this time by the Charlotte Checkers, 3-2 on Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Michael Ryan and Eric Wellwood scored for the Phantoms in regulation. Chris Terry gave the Checkers a 1-0 lead on the power play at 12:22 of the first period. On a cross-ice feed from Zach Boychuk, Terry one-timed it just under the crossbar past Phantoms goaltender Michael Leighton to score his 21st goal of the season. The Phantoms would respond after the intermission break to tie the score at 1-1. Just 44 seconds into the period, Ben Holmstrom sent a cross-ice pass through the neutral zone to a streaking Michael Ryan who beat Checkers goaltender Mike Murphy five-hole to score his 16th goal of the season. Adirondack blasted away for much of the second and third periods but were unable to solve Charlotte goalie Mike Murphy. It remained 1-1 until late in the third period when with 1:59 remaining, Mike Murphy juggled the puck behind his own net. Eric Wellwood would pick up the rebound and go to the front of the net and slide one just across the Checkers goal line to give Adirondack the 2-1 lead. Charlotte with their goaltender pulled, would tie the game at 2-2 with 28 seconds remaining as Matthew Pistilli batted one out of mid-air to score his second goal of the season with an assist to Chris Terry. The controversial goal was disputed by the Phantoms who argued that the puck had been punched or hit in by a high stick in the scramble in the crease. Moments before the goal, Adirondack had shot the puck the length of the ice and players from both sides appeared stopped believing that an icing would be called. It was out of that pause that Charlotte rushed back with numbers the other way and scored the game-tying goal. In the shootout, Zack Boychuk got the game-winner to seal the victory for the Checkers to improve their record to 9-0 at the Glens Falls Civic Center the last two seasons, dating back to their days as the Albany River Rats.

February 20, 2011 - Adirondack 3 @ Albany 4 (SO)

Adirondack extended their point streak to seven games (3-0-4) in the loss. Danny Syvret gave Adirondack a 1-0 lead on the power play at the 9:28 mark of the first period. On a cross-ice pass from Denis Hamel, Syvret scored his seventh of the season from the right wing circle to beat Devils goaltender David Caruso top shelf. Midway through the second period, Adirondack went on a full 2-minute 5-on-3 man advantage after a tripping minor was called on Chris Murray and an elbowing minor on Tim Sestito. The Phantoms would extend their lead to 2-0 on the power play as Danny Syvret scored his second power play goal of the game on a blast from the point assisted by Erik Gustafsson and Greg Moore. Albany would storm back with three unanswered goals by Tim Sestito (3rd), Pierre Luc Leblond (2nd) and Jeff Prough to give the Devils a 3-2 lead into the intermission break. Michael Ryan would tie the score at 3-3 1:18 into the third period on a wild scrum in front of the Devils net. Mike Testwuide from behind the Devils net found Michael Ryan who was stationed in front of the crease and backhanded one into the open net. Zac Rinaldo took a five-minute major on a hit to Albany's Chris Murray late in the third period forcing the Phantoms to kill a power play deep into the overtime. Adirondack's penalty kill came through and after consecutive penalties taken by the Devils, Adirondack had their chance for a power play goal in the overtime but were unable to score as the game progressed to the shootout for the third night in a row for Adirondack. Adam Henrique scored the game-winner in the shootout to conclude wild game at the Times Union Center on Sunday afternoon. The Time Warner Cable Cup is now tied at 3-3.

The Windsor, Ontario native opened the scoring on Wednesday night as he beat Crunch goaltender J.P. Levasseur from a sharp angle to help Adirondack to 4-2 victory over the Syracuse. Then, he gave the Phantoms a 2-1 lead on Saturday night after stealing the puck from Checkers netminder Mike Murphy from behind the net and sliding one into the open net. In his rookie season with Adirondack, he has recorded 12 goals and 23 points in 50 games. Wellwood was called up to the Flyers back on November 1st and registered his first NHL point on Andreas Nodl's game-winner on November 6 against the New York Islanders.
