LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Springfield (1/6): The Manchester Monarchs narrowly edged the Springfield Falcons, 2-1, at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Center Marc-Andre Cliche scored both goals for the Monarchs. Center Rob Hisey picked up his fourth goal of the season for the Falcons. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (17-9-3) picked up his 17th win of the season stopping 22-of-23 shots in regulation. Falcons netminder Jean-Philippe Levasseur (0-9-0) took his ninth loss of the season with 26 saves on 28 shots. Manchester went 1-for-4 on the power play. Springfield was 0-of-3 with the man advantage.
At Albany (1/8): After a goal by center Marc-Andre Cliche was waved off in overtime, Albany River Rats' goaltender Justin Peters stopped all three shootout snipers to give the Manchester Monarchs a 3-2 loss in a shootout at the Times Union Center on Friday night. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier stopped defenseman Jamie McBain in the shootout but could not hold off left wingers Jacob Mickflikier, Chris Terry or Drayson Bowman. Peters denied all three Monarchs shooters as centers Juraj Mikus, Corey Elkins and Gabe Gauthier could not find the back of the net. Cliche and defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov scored in regulation for the Monarchs. Bowman and left wing Nicolas Blandchard tallied for the River Rats in regulation. Bernier (17-9-4) took his fourth shootout loss of the season with 33 saves on 35 shots in regulation and overtime and one shootout save. Peters (11-10-2) earned his 11th win of the season stopping 38-of-40 in regulation and overtime followed by all three shootout snipers. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Albany was 1-of-4 with the man advantage.
At Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (1/9): Goaltender Jeff Zatkoff stopped 37 shots and right wing John Zeiler picked up the game-winning goal as the Manchester Monarchs handed the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins a 3-1 loss at the Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza on Saturday night. Along with Zeiler's game-winner, center Tom Cavanagh scored his first goal in his debut and center Corey Elkins picked up his team leading 11th tally of the season. Former Monarchs right wing Konstantin Pushkarev scored the lone goal for the Penguins. Zatkoff (8-3-0) picked up his eighth win of the season with 37 saves on 38 shots. Penguins netminder John Curry (16-13-1) took his 13th loss of the season stopping 18-of-21 shots. Manchester went 1-for-5 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-of-6 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (25-11-1-4) remain in first place in the Atlantic Division with 55 points in 41 games this season. They are ranked third in the AHL behind the Hershey Bears (29-8-0-2) who have 60 points in 39 games and the Hamilton Bulldogs (26-9-2-3) who have 57 points in 40 games.
Manchester is undefeated in regulation in their last four games (2-0-0-2).
The Monarchs are 15-4-0-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season.
The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked second in the AHL. They have given up 20 goals in 168 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.
Their power play is ranked fourth in the league with 31 goals on 159 opportunities with the man advantage.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 30-of-41 games thus far this season.
The Monarchs are 13-0-0-0 when scoring the first goal on home ice.
Manchester is also undefeated on home ice when playing on Fridays this season with a record of 6-0-0-0.
Center Corey Elkins (11-15=26) leads Manchester with 26 points.
Center Gabe Gauthier (5-18=23) leads the Monarchs with 18 assists.
Left wing Bud Holloway (10-12=22) and center Marc-Andre Cliche (10-5=15) rank second on the Monarchs with 10 goals each.
Holloway ranks third overall in scoring with 22 points.
Cliche was on a three game goal scoring streak with four tallies from January 2-8.
Center Oscar Moller (9-10=19), who is currently on recall to the Los Angeles Kings, and Holloway are tied for fourth in the AHL with four game-winning goals.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (7-13=20) leads Monarchs blueliners with 20 points which is ranked fourth overall on the Monarchs squad.
Voynov was named to the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic's PlanetUSA team. The game will be held in Portland, Maine at the Cumberland County Civic Center on January 18-19.
Right wing Scott Parse (3-10=13), who is currently on recall with the Kings, and defenseman Drew Bagnall (2-6=8) lead the team in the plus/minus category with a plus-11.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 17-9-4 in 31 games of the season. His 17 wins are tied for second in the AHL.
Bernier was named the starting goaltender for Team Canada at the Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic in Portland.
Bernier's four shutouts are also tied for second in the AHL.
Bernier is ranked third in the league with a 1.98 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a.941 save percentage.
Netminder Jeff Zatkoff has played in 12 games for the Monarchs this season, recording a 8-3-0 record, a 2.06 goals-against-average, a.938 save percentage and two shutouts.
