Phantoms Beat Albany In OT; Lose Two Close Games Over Weekend

January 11, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Adirondack Phantoms News Release

The Phantoms started off the week with a thrilling overtime win over the Albany River Rats at the Times Union Center on Wednesday night. David Laliberte scored the tying goal with 67 seconds left in regulation and Stefan Legein netted the game-winner in overtime for Adirondack's second win over the Rats this season. Friday in Providence Jason Ward scored early in the second period to tie the game at 1-1, but Drew Larman's goal 31 seconds into the third period was the difference and an empty net goal in the final minute game the Bruins a 3-1 win. Goaltender John Grahame had another strong game Friday night, making 37 saves on 39 shots, but suffered his fifth straight loss; it was Grahame's first game at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in almost ten years - at the beginning of his pro career he helped Providence win the 1999 Calder Cup Championship and reach the Eastern Conference Finals three straight years (1999-2000).

Saturday night Adirondack had Flyers number one goaltender Ray Emery in goal for a rehab assignment. The Phantoms completely out-played the Portland Pirates, holding the Pirates to just 14 shots in the game, but the play of goaltender Jhonas Enroth overshadowed Emery's Glens Falls debut as Portland escaped with a narrow 2-1 win. Emery looked sharp in his Phantoms debut, his first AHL game since October 13, 2007 (where he rehabbed with Binghamton). Emery made 12 saves on 14 shots in a 2-1 loss to Portland Saturday night; he became the sixth goaltender to play for Adirondack this season (along with Johan Backlund, John Grahame, Nic Riopel, Brian Boucher and Michael-Lee Teslak).

Week 15 Preview:

Although technically still on the Phantoms roster as of Monday afternoon, Ray Emery drove back to Philadelphia after Saturday's game and is expected to rejoin the Flyers for their game Tuesday night versus the Dallas Stars - although no word yet on which of the Flyers three goalies will get the start. On the injury front, Patrick Maroon remains out of the lineup and will not return for at least another week, at the earliest. Defenseman Sean Curry suffered a lower body injury on Sunday, January 3rd at Hershey; although he finished the game and skated with the team last week, he missed all three games in Week 14 and is listed as day-to-day.

This week for Adirondack a fourth and final regular season matchup with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers; the Phantoms won the first three games and will be looking for the clean sweep on Wednesday, January 13th at 7:00 pm at the Glens Falls Civic Center. Adirondack will then hit the road for their longest geographic road trip of the year, their first of two trips this season to Norfolk, Virginia. The Phantoms will play a two-game series against the Admirals on Friday and Saturday at Norfolk Scope. After the games in Virginia the team will return home for the AHL All-Star Break, which runs from Sunday, January 17-Tuesday, January 19th.

Wednesday, January 13 - 7:00 pm - Glens Falls Civic Center - Glens Falls, NY

vs. Bridgeport Sound Tigers (21-17-1-2, 45 pts)

Tied-Fifth Place, Atlantic Division

The Phantoms have won the first three games this season against Bridgeport, out-scoring them 10-6. The Sound Tigers began the 2010 calendar year with a three-game losing streak, but rallied themselves last weekend with a two-game sweep of their home-and-home series with the Springfield Falcons. Friday at Springfield, Michael Haley broke a 2-2 tie at 13:18 of the third period with the game-winning goal. It was 3-2 again on Saturday at Bridgeport, but it took overtime as defenseman Mark Flood scored with 5 seconds left in the extra session to secure the two points. Goaltenders Scott Munroe and Nathan Lawson have evenly alternated starts over the last month, with three starts from rehabbing Islander Rick DiPietro interspersed. If Bridgeport follows the recent pattern, Wednesday night would be Lawson's turn in the rotation. LW Jesse Joensuu has one point in each of his last six games (2 goals, 4 assists). Leading Scorer: Sean Bentivoglio (LW) - 25 points (12 goals, 13 assists) in 41 GP. Leading Goaltender: Nathan Lawson (G) - 2.29 GAA, 0.930 save pct., 8-7-1 in 16 GP. Phantoms Player of the Week: (Week 14)

Jared Ross - C - #18 3 GP, 4 points (0 goals, 4 assists), +3, 0 PIMs

Phantoms captain Jared Ross led all Adirondack players in scoring during their three games in Week 15. Wednesday night in Albany, the Huntsville, Alabama native was in the middle of Adirondack's third period comeback as he had the primary assist on the game-tying goal with 67 seconds left in regulation and then set up the overtime winning goal for a 4-3 win over the River Rats. In the Phantoms two weekend games, Ross had the primary assist on the team's only goals on each night, making crisp centering passes to feed goals by Jason Ward at Providence and Andreas Nodl vs. Portland. For the week Ross had four assists and a +3 rating in three games played; he is tied for the team-lead in assists (17) and ranks fourth in points (20) in 33 AHL games played this year.

Phantoms Quick Hits:

- ASSIST STREAK - Captain Jared Ross extended his assist streak to four games on Saturday when he set up Andreas Nodl's third period goal against Portland. It is the longest assist streak of the season, passing Patrick Maroon's three-game assist streak in mid-December. Ross is now tied with Maroon for the team-lead in assists (17) and needs one more game with a point to equal Stefan Legin's season-high five-game point streak.

- NHL PRESENCE - Flyers number one goaltender Ray Emery made his Phantoms debut on Saturday night against Portland. Emery did not see a lot of action, but he looked sharp, stopping 12-of-14 shots and aggressively patrolling the defensive zone. It was his first AHL game since October 13, 2007 vs. Hershey when playing a rehab assignment with Binghamton.

- AHL POINT CLUB - Rookie defenseman David Sloane secured his first career AHL point on Friday night at Providence with an assist on Jason Ward's second period goal. Sloane's first pro points came with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL earlier this season, but this was his first point in the AHL.

- LOW OUTPUT - The Phantoms suffered back-to-back losses over the weekend where they scored just one goal in each. So far this season there have been 10 games where Adirondack scored just one goal; they are winless in those games (0-8-2-0).

- FIRST ASSIST - Rookie defenseman Kevin Marshall also tallied his first career AHL assist over the weekend. Marshall had the second assist on Andreas Nodl's third period goal against the Portland Pirates on Saturday in Glens Falls. It was his first career pro assist, but third point of his career.

- STRONG DEFENSE - The Phantoms lost their first game in regulation this season when allowing just two goals to an opponent when they lost to Portland 2-1 Saturday night. In the 12 games this season where Adirondack has a 9-1-2-0 record when holding their opposition to two goals.

- THE CENTURY APPROACHES - Center Jonathon Kalinski is one game away from his 100th career Pro game. The Bonnyville, Alberta native has played in 77 career AHL games for the Phantoms and 22 NHL games with the Philadelphia Flyers. He should reach the 100th game milestone on Wednesday night vs. Bridgeport.

- VACATED CREASE - Adirondack conceded its second empty net goal of the season on Friday night at Providence in a 3-1 loss to the Bruins. The Phantoms did not allow an empty-netter for the first 23 games of the season, before letting one in on December 12 at Syracuse. Adirondack has scored four empty net goals, in three games thanks to Jon Matsumoto scoring two empty-netters in one game on December 12th vs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
