LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS
Vs. Portland (12/2): Goaltender Jhonas Enroth stopped all 39 shots for his second shutout of the season as the Portland Pirates handed the Manchester Monarchs their second home loss, 2-0, of the season at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. Centers Matt Caruana and Felix Schutz scored for the Pirates. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (10-6-2) took his sixth loss of the season with 28 saves on 30 shots. Enroth (7-8-0) earned his seventh win of the season with a shutout stopping all 39 shots. Manchester went 0-for-2 on the power play. Portland was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Vs. Hartford (12/4): Right wing Kevin Westgarth collected two goals and defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov collected a goal and two assists as the Manchester Monarchs secured a 7-1 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. Right wing Geoff Walker, center Juraj Mikus, center Marc-Andre Cliche and defenseman Alec Martinez added to Voynov and Westgarth's goals for the Monarchs. Right wing Derek Couture scored the lone goal for the Wolf Pack. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (11-6-2) collected his 11th win of the season with 19 saves on 20 shots. Wolf Pack netminder Steve Valiquette (0-1-0) took the loss for the Wolf Pack in his first game of a two-game conditioning stint. Hartford's goaltender Matt Zaba, who saw 10:39 of play time, stopped 2-of-4 shots. The Monarchs were 3-for-8 on the power play. The Wolf Pack was held scoreless on the power play in two chances.
Vs. Worcester (12/5): Left winger David Meckler's shootout goal lifted the Manchester Monarchs over the Worcester Sharks, 5-4, on Saturday night at the Verizon Wireless Arena. Following an uneventful overtime period, Meckler's goal gave the Monarchs the shootout win in the eighth round. Monarchs right wing Geoff Walker, center Juraj Mikus, center Oscar Moller and center Gabe Gauthier also scored in the shootout, as did Worcester's center Logan Couture, center Benn Ferreiro, left wing Brandon Mashinter and center Cory Quirk. Defenseman Alec Martinez, center Marc-Andre Cliche and right wing Kevin Westgarth (two) scored for the Monarchs in regulation. For Worcester, defenseman Michael Wilson, center Steven Zalewski and Ferreiro (two) found the net. Monarchs goaltender Jeff Zatkoff (6-2-0) recorded his sixth win of the season and third shootout win while stopping 29 shots on 33 attempts. Sharks netminder Tyler Sexsmith (2-4-1) recorded a shootout loss while stopping 25 shots on 29 attempts. Manchester was 0-for-2 on the power play. Worcester went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
At Lowell (12/6): Rookie left wing Dwight King scored his first American Hockey League goal with 18.1 seconds left in the game to edge the Manchester Monarchs past the Lowell Devils, 6-5, at the Tsongas Arena on Sunday evening. The Monarchs picked up additional scoring from left wing David Meckler (two) and defensemen Alec Martinez, Patrick Mullen and Viatcheslav Voynov. The Devils were able to find the net with shots from center Tim Sestito (two), right wing Patrick Davis, right wing Matt Halischuk and center Michael Swift. Monarchs goaltender Jonathan Bernier (12-6-2) picked up his 12th win of the season by stopping 28-of-33 shots. Devils netminder Mike McKenna (8-6-0) dropped his sixth game of the season with 34 saves on 40 shots. Manchester was 3-for-6 on the power play. Lowell went 3-for-4 with the man advantage.
NEWS & NOTES
The Manchester Monarchs (18-7-1-2) advanced their first place lead in the Atlantic Division this week with three consecutive wins for 39 points which is also tied for second in the AHL with the Rochester Americans (19-5-1-0, 39 points). The Texas Stars (18-5-2-2, 40 points) lead the league with 40 points.
The Monarchs are 11-2-0-1 at the Verizon Wireless Arena this season with their only regulation losses coming at the hands of the Hershey Bears on Saturday, November 7 and a 2-0 shutout to the Portland Pirates on Wednesday, December 2. Manchester won their first six home games this season.
Manchester is on a three-game win streak and has won six of their last seven games. The Monarchs are 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 games.
The Monarchs penalty kill is ranked sixth in the AHL. They have given up 13 goals in 122 attempts when their opponent has had the man advantage.
Manchester has been outshot by their opponent in 21-of-28 games thus far this season.
The Monarchs tied the record for goals scored by their opponent (five) and combined goals scored (11) in one game in their 6-5 win over the Lowell Devils on Sunday evening.
Manchester also tied this season's record for combined goals scored in a period with five tallies in the second period of Sunday's game.
Devils right wing Patrick Davis and Monarchs left wing David Meckler's goals 11 seconds apart set a new season record for the fastest two goals combined between the Monarchs and their opponent for the 2009-10 season...The previous record this season was 21 seconds and the all-time record is nine seconds
With 18 goals scored by the Monarchs in their last three games, centers Oscar Moller (8-10=18) and Gabe Gauthier (4-14=14) moved into a first place tie on the Monarchs roster with 18 points each.
Moller's eight tallies also lead Manchester.
Moller's three game-winning goals are tied for seventh place in the AHL.
Moller is also tied with right wing Scott Parse, who is up with the Los Angeles Kings, for the team lead in the plus/minus category with a plus-8.
Moller was recalled by the Kings on Sunday, December 6.
Gauthier collected seven assists over the last three games to move him into the tie for first place. His 14 assists also lead the team.
Center Corey Elkins' (7-10=17) six assists this week moved him into a tie with center Andrei Loktionov (6-11=17) with 17 points each which is good for third place.
Elkins has 10 points (2-8=10) in his last eight games.
Loktionov was recalled by the Kings on Monday, November 23 and suffered an upper body injury in his debut on Wednesday, November 25 against the Edmonton Oilers.
Defenseman Viatcheslav Voynov (6-10=16) also contributed to the scoresheet this weekend with five points (2-3=5) which moved him into fifth place overall on the Monarchs and the leader of the team's blueliners.
Right wing Kevin Westgarth (5-5=10) doubled his points on the season with four goals and an assist in three games this week.
Defenseman Alec Martinez (3-2=5) is currently on a three-game goal scoring streak with three tallies.
Rookie left wing Dwight King (1-2=3) made his AHL debut on Saturday in the Monarchs 5-4 shootout win over the Worcester Sharks and recorded two assists. He also scored his first AHL goal on Sunday with 18.1 seconds remaining in the game to give the Monarchs a 6-5 win over the Devils.
Goaltender Jonathan Bernier has a record of 12-6-2 in 20 games of the season. His 12 wins are tied for third place in the AHL.
Bernier is ranked fourth in the league with a 1.89 goals-against-average and is ranked second with a .943 save percentage.
In eight games with the Monarchs, netminder Jeff Zatkoff has a 6-2-0 record. He is tied for 14th in the AHL with a 2.31 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage which is good for a sixth place tie in the AHL.

T-shirt Night/Toys For Tots Toy Drive - The first 2,000 fans to the Monarchs game on Saturday, December 12 when they host the Lowell Devils will receive a Monarchs T-shirt, courtesy of Hood. The Monarchs Care Foundation is also asking fans to bring in a new, unwrapped toy for children in need.
