Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH - Former teammates left wing Ryan Flinn and center Yanick Lehoux trounced the Manchester Monarchs as the San Antonio Rampage ran away with a 6-3 win in front of 5,420 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night.
Manchester (4-5-1-0) is tied for fifth place in the Atlantic Division with nine points. San Antonio (5-8-0-0) is in fifth place in the West Division with 10 points.
Veteran defenseman Bryan Helmer started off the scoring for the Rampage with his fourth goal of the season at 12:18 of the first period. On the power play, Helmer and defenseman Matthew Spiller set up on the points. Left wing Tyson Nash fed the puck to Helmer at the right point who snapped a shot that trickled under the right pad of Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera.
Monarchs center Gabe Gauthier evened things up with his second goal of the season at 14:31 of the opening frame. The second place power play in the league went to work as the Rampage were down two men. Defenseman Eric Werner gave the puck to right wing Konstantin Pushkarev who tossed it toward the net. With bodies flying in the crease, Gauthier was able to jam the puck past Rampage goaltender Philippe Sauve.
The Rampage regained the lead at the 16-minute mark of the opening stanza with a shorthanded goal by center Jeff Taffe. Stealing the puck from the Monarchs defense, Taffe broke in on LaBarbera all alone and roofed the puck over the goalie's glove for his fifth goal of the season.
Dropping two guys to penalties, the Monarchs faced a 5-on-3 shorthanded situation that the Rampage capitalized on at 9:30 of the second period. Defenseman Travis Roche set up at the top of the right face-off circle and sent a slap shot into the top right corner of the net for his first goal of the season to give the Rampage a 3-1 lead. Right wing Bill Thomas and Taffe earned assists on the play.
Center Daniel Winnik gave the Rampage a three-goal lead with his third tally of the season at 10:21 of the middle frame. San Antonio's third power play goal of the game came when Spiller sent the puck from the right point to Winnik at the left face-off circle. Winnik sent a one-timer past LaBarbera's blocker for the goal. Defenseman Joe Callahan also assisted on the goal.
Manchester cut the Rampage's lead in half as rookie right wing John Zeiler collected his second goal of the season at 15:05 of the second period. Center Patrick O'Sullivan fired a slap shot from the center point that Zeiler redirected past Sauve for the power play goal. Defenseman T.J. Kemp earned an assist on the Monarchs second goal.
Winnik scored his second goal of the evening at 5:02 of the third period. Center Pascal Rheaume skated down the right side and fired a shot on net that LaBarbera stopped with his right pad. The rebound bounced onto the tape of Winnik's stick and he flipped it into the open net for his fourth tally of the season. Lehoux assisted on the goal.
O'Sullivan tallied his first goal of the season for the Monarchs at 16:26 of the final frame. Kemp carried the puck into the offensive zone and snapped a shot toward the net from the left face-off circle. O'Sullivan redirected the shot over Sauve.
Rheaume finished off the evening with an empty net goal at 19:24 of the third period to finalize the score at 6-3.
LaBarbera took the loss with 27 saves. Sauve earned the win stopping 35 shots.
Manchester went 2-for-8 on the power play. San Antonio was 3-for-4 with the man advantage.
