READING, Pa. - The Manchester Monarchs dropped Wednesday night's game to the Reading Royals, 6-0, from Santander Arena.
The Monarchs (40-22-3-2) gave up four first period goals to the Royals (36-23-8-0) and lost their second straight game, 6-0.
The Royals started the scoring at :41 seconds of the first period, on the 17th goal of the season by Matt Wilkins. Adam Schmidt stole the puck along the left hashmarks, where he fired a shot towards goal that bounced off the stick of Wilkins in front of the crease and past Monarchs goaltender, Evan Cowley, to make the score, 1-0.
Reading scored just :33 seconds later, at 1:16 of the first period, on the 10th goal of the season by Steven Swavely. Swavely skated into the offensive zone along the right wing on a 2-on-1, where he sent a pass to Michael Huntebrinker in the slot, before he got the puck back and took a shot from the right circle, under the glove of Cowley, to give the Royals a 2-0 lead.
Reading tacked on another goal at 1:43 of the first period, on the 20th goal of the season by Chris McCarthy. Chase Golightly collected the puck at the middle of the blueline and took a shot towards goal, that was deflected by McCarthy, past the glove of Cowley, to make the score, 3-0.
The Royals added their fourth goal of the night at 14:24 of the first period on the 2nd goal of the game and 18th of the season by Wilkins. Schmidt sent a pass from the blueline to Ryan Penny waiting at the right post, who fed Wilkins with a pass in the slot, where he beat Cowley to the blocker side, to make the score, 4-0.
Reading extended their lead at 14:59 of the second period on the 2nd goal of the season by Matias Cleland. Mark Bennett carried the puck to the right circle and wristed a shot off the post behind Cowley, where the rebound bounced into the slot for Cleland, who buried a shot into the open net, to give the Royals a 5-0 lead.
The Royals added to their lead with a shorthanded goal at 17:46 of the second period, on the 17th goal of the season by Schmidt. Huntebrinker pushed the puck out of the defensive zone, where Schmidt carried it in on a breakaway and beat Cowley to the glove side, to make the score, 6-0.
