Mavericks Drop Heart-Breaker at Fort Wayne in OT

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite leading for more than 57 minutes, the Kansas City Mavericks (33-29-3-2) dropped a heart-breaking 2-1 overtime decision Wednesday night at Fort Wayne (44-18-4-1) by a 2-1 final score.

It didn't take long for the Mavericks to gain the upper hand, Alex Brooks netting his third goal of the season two minutes into the contest for the early 1-0 advantage. The goal was part of a fast start for the visiting team, which raced out to a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal and finished the first with 11 chances compared to five for the Komets.

After a scoreless second, the Mavericks appeared to be closing in on a shutout victory until Cody Sol fired a shot that pinballed into the back of the net for the Komets' first score of the game, tying the contest with just over 30 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Justin Hodgman played hero, finding the back of the net just under two minutes into the three-on-three overtime to steal the extra point from the Mavericks.

Kansas City closes out its four-game road trip with a Friday night tilt at Indy, a game with heavy playoff implications as the Fuel sit three points back of KC and Kalamazoo but with a game in hand.
