Manchester Monarchs News Release

MANCHESTER, NH – Right wing Brad Smyth and left wing Noah Clarke each had two goals, and goaltender Mathieu Garon finished with 25 saves as the Manchester Monarchs completed a dominating season sweep of the Utah Grizzlies with a 5-1 win before 6,776 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Wednesday night. The Monarchs, now with a record of 26-6-2-1 and 55 points on the season, finished their season series against the Grizzlies with a 4-0-0-0 record. With Wednesday's victory, the first place Monarchs moved four points ahead of the idle Hartford Wolf Pack (24-8-1-2, 51 points) in the American Hockey League's Atlantic Division.

The Monarchs took the lead early and then never looked back. Smyth opened the scoring with his ninth goal, hammered home from the slot just 59 seconds in. Center Yanick Lehoux and left wing Jeff Giuliano each assisted on the goal, allowed by netminder Frank Doyle. The product of the University of Maine was making his first AHL start.

Doyle stopped 11 of the 14 first period shots he faced. Utah head coach Pat Conacher replaced him with netminder Jean-Marc Pelletier (20 shots, 18 saves) to start the second period. Giuliano and Smyth accounted for the other two goals allowed by Doyle. Giuliano collected his fourth of the season with assists to defenseman Jason Holland and Lehoux at 4:37, and Smyth registered his second goal of the game and his 10th of the season with assists to center Michael Cammalleri (0-3=3) and left wing Dustin Brown at 18:04. Smyth's second goal was scored with the Monarchs holding a power play advantage.

Clarke added power play goals in both the second and third period and Cammalleri assisted on both as the Monarchs opened a 5-0 lead. Clarke scored his 11th of the season with a one-timer from the right circle 6:37 into the middle period. He notched his 12th of the season on a rebound just 57 seconds into the final period.

Defenseman Peter Metcalf spoiled Garon's shutout bid with his second goal of the season, scored on a rebound 7:52 into the final period. The Metcalf goal stopped a Monarchs shutout streak of 173 minutes and 30 seconds against the Grizzlies. The Monarchs outscored the Grizzlies, 17-0, during the shutout streak that started in the first game of the season series.

Garon earned the win in net, his 17th of the season (17-6-1). Doyle took the loss (0-1-0). The Monarchs finished with a 3-for-10 effort on the power play. The Grizzlies were 0-for-5.
