Wolves Help Bring Soldiers Closer to Home
January 5, 2005 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Chicago Wolves News Release
The Chicago Wolves will be collecting pre-paid, long-distance phone cards to donate to the United Service Organizations (USO) during Armed Forces Week on Tue., Jan. 11; Fri., Jan. 14 and Sat., Jan. 15.
The cards will go to soldiers stationed overseas to help them stay in touch with loved ones at home. Fans are asked to bring in a phone card of any denomination. Military Exchange Global Pre-paid Cards are preferred. For more information click on the "calling card for troops" link on www.uso.com/illinois.
"What the Wolves are doing is a blessing to these soldiers," said Bob Stone, program facility manager of the USO of Illinois. "The soldiers will be able to stay in touch with their families without a large financial burden when they receive these cards."
In addition, Wolves players will wear special armed forces jerseys in the three home games that week. All jerseys will be auctioned, with the exception of four that are chosen by fans in an on-line vote, which will be awarded in the special Armed Forces Week raffle.
The auctioning, which takes place in the East Lobby of the Allstate Arena, starts when the doors open for the Tue., Jan. 11 game against the Hamilton Bulldogs and ends at the second intermission of the Sat., Jan. 15 contest against the St. John's Maple Leafs. Proceeds will benefit CAUSE: Comfort for America's Uniformed Services Elite, which provides comfort and recreation items and organizes events for soldiers recuperating in military hospitals and rehabilitation centers from wounds and injuries suffered in military theaters.
Each game will feature a different color guard and a ceremonial puck drop by a distinguished member of the military. The U.S. Navy Band from the Great Lakes Naval Station will be on hand for Saturday's game. Fans will also have the opportunity to meet and greet members of the Marine Corps, Navy, Naval Reserve, Air Force, and Air Force Reserve, who will be situated throughout the concourse on Saturday.
