Monarchs Prospects Shine In Respective College Tournaments

MANCHESTER, NH – Manchester Monarchs prospects Brian Boyle and Jeff Tambellini each earned Most Valuable Player honors in their respective college tournaments this past weekend. Boyle, 20, a sophomore at Boston College University, helped solidify the Eagles hold on the nation's top ranking with four points (3-1=4) in two games, including two goals in BC's 3-1 win over New Hampshire in the Hockey East tournament final on March 19. The 6-foot-7, 235-pound native of Hingham, Massachusetts, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player as the Eagles move on to the East Regional of the NCAA Tournament beginning on Friday, March 25 at 4:30 p.m. at the DCU Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Eagles are scheduled to meet Atlantic Hockey tournament champion Mercyhurst in the first round of the regional.

Selected by the Monarchs parent club, the Los Angeles Kings, in the first-round (26th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Boyle's 18 goals are second on the Eagles. Boyle is also tied for third on the Eagles in scoring with 26 points.

Tambellini, 20, a junior at the University of Michigan, scored his team-leading fifth game-winning goal to lead the fourth ranked Wolverines into the Midwest Regional of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-2 victory over Ohio State University on March 19. In two Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament games versus Ohio State and Alaska Fairbanks, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound speedster from Port Moody, British Columbia, tied for the club lead with three points (2-1=3) and fired a team-leading 16 shots on goal in earning the tournament's Most Valuable Player honors.

Also selected by the Kings in the first-round (27th overall) in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Tambellini is tied for the team-lead in scoring with 52 points (21-31=52) in 40 games and leads the club in game-winning goals (five) and plus/minus (+29). His 21 goals are second on the club and his seven power play goals are third on the Wolverines, who are next scheduled to open NCAA Midwest Regional tournament play against the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, March 25 at 8:30 p.m. at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Other Kings draft picks participating in college tournaments last weekend included BC senior forward Ryan Murphy (sixth-round, 185th overall, 2002), Colorado College senior defenseman Richard Petiot (fourth-round, 116th overall, 2001) and Colorado College sophomore goaltender Matt Zaba (eighth-round, 231st overall, 2003).
