Hershey Bears News Release

Last Week: After opening the week with a 4-2 loss at Springfield Wednesday, the BEARS rebounded in fine fashion by defeating the first place Binghamton Senators 3-2 in a shootout at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena Ryan Steeves scored his second goal in as many games, while Martin Wilde scored a goal and recorded an assist to pace the offense. Brett Clark scored in the ninth round of a shootout to earn the BEARS two points against the Senators, while Peter Budaj made 43 saves in the triumph. Sunday, the BEARS hosted the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and blanked their East Division rivals 3-0 at GIANT Center. Mike Souza scored two goals, and Martin Hlinka notched three assists in the game. Peter Budaj earned his fifth shutout of the season, making 23 saves. The win pulled the BEARS within five points of a playoff spot in the East Division with 13 games to play.

Notables: Martin Wilde's multi-point game Friday at Binghamton was his first in the American Hockey League in 168 games. Mike Souza has nine goals in his last 16 games after Sunday's two-goal effort against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The shutout Sunday by Peter Budaj was his ninth of his HERSHEY career. The nine shutouts places him all by himself in sixth place in the all-time HERSHEY shutout list. Ed Chadwick is fifth on the all-time list with 12 whitewashes. The win Sunday against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was the fourth in six meetings this season between the BEARS and Penguins, although the Penguins have outscored HERSHEY 18-14 in the contests. With Sunday's win over the Penguins, the BEARS have now won five straight home games and nine of the last ten at GIANT Center. The five-game home winning streak is the longest for HERSHEY since moving to GIANT Center in the fall of 2002. The three-assist game by Martin Hlinka was his first in a BEARS uniform. The Calder Cup, the symbol of excellence in the American Hockey League, will be on display at GIANT Center this Saturday night when HERSHEY hosts the Philadelphia Phantoms at 7:00 p.m. The BEARS have thirteen games remaining in the 2004-05 regular season, including four against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and the Philadelphia Phantoms. HERSHEY also has two games left with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Down on the Farm: The Reading Royals begin the week one point back of first place Atlantic City in the ECHL's North Division standings after a 2-1 overtime loss Sunday night against Trenton. Graig Mischler scored the lone goal for the Royals in the second period, his ninth of the season. While the Royals stand a point out of first place, they also have three games in hand on the front running Boardwalk Bullies, and have the fewest games played among the top four teams in the division. Reading returns to action this Tuesday night with a home game against the Toledo Storm. The UHL's Quad City Mallards won on Sunday, defeating Adirondack 5-4 at home. The Mallards trailed in the game 3-0 before Jason Deskins scored a pair of second period goals to cut the lead to one. Terry Hollinger, Troy Smith and Marty Standish scored third period goals to rally Quad City to the victory.
