Missions finally get to Qualls, Express
August 28, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas â Down 7-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Round Rock Express looked like they were poised to go quietly away against the San Antonio Missions. San Antonio did eventually win the game, but not without the Express putting up a fight.
Carlos Hernandez hit a grand slam to bring the Express to within one run, but Jared Hoerman got Anthony Acevedo to fly out to left to finally end the game and beat Round Rock, 7-6, in front of 8,123 at The Dell Diamond.
Aided by a couple of errors, Round Rock plated one run to bring the score to 7-2 against Hoerman, the Texas League save leader. That brought up Hernandez, who hit a towering shot to left for his first home run with the Express this year. However, it wasn't enough.
For four innings, starter Chad Qualls danced in and out of danger, avoiding the one big innings that plagued him in the first half. So, a bunch of little innings did him in.
The Missions got after Qualls from the start, but couldn't break through in the first, leaving the bases loaded. They continued that through Qualls' five innings, getting nine hits off the Round Rock ace, but also leaving nine on base.
Up 2-0 in the fifth, a Jim Horner ground out and Greg Jacobs single brought home runs and doubled the San Antonio lead to 4-0.
That was enough for Nageotte, the Texas League's strikeout leader. After having some success against him earlier this year, the Express couldn't figure out Nageotte this time around, getting only one run and three hits against him.
Nageotte (11-7) got the win and Qualls (8-11) was the loser.
The second game of the four-game series will be Friday at 7:05 p.m.
