Minor Out-Duels Barnes to End Dogs Three-Game Win Streak

Rosemont, Ill. - The Chicago Dogs saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Monday night as they were thwarted by Gary starter Daniel Minor for the second time in less than a week.

The RailCats received seven innings of one run ball from Minor en route to a 5-1 series opening victory. The win was the seventh for Gary over Chicago in nine games between the two clubs this year.

Chicago scored first in the game in the home half of the first inning. Jonathan Moroney lined a double to center field on the first pitch of the game from Minor and later came in to score on a sun-aided RBI single from Treysen Vavra. Vavra lined a ball sharply to Gary shortstop Randy Santiesteban who was unable to make a play after losing the ball in the sun.

Moroney's double was the first of nine hits for the Dogs on the night, but the only extra-base hit they would tally in the game.

After Alex Crosby socked a two-run home run to put Gary in front 2-1 in the top of the third, Chicago threatened again in their half of the inning. The Dogs picked up a pair of singles to start the inning from Moroney and Edwin Arroyo. However, Moroney was thrown out at the plate trying to score on an ensuing Vavra ground ball. With men on first and second, Minor coaxed a fly out and a strike out to escape the jam.

From there, the Gary right-hander would set down 11 straight Chicago batters, before being lifted from the game following the seventh. Minor ultimately allowed just one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking none. Minor earned his seventh win of the year, the most in the American Association.

Scott Barnes was impressive in his own right in his seventh start of the year for Chicago, despite ultimately being out-dueled. Barnes went seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits. Barnes took the loss, his first decision of the year.

With the score still close at 2-1 entering the eighth, the RailCats blew the game open with three runs on two hits, one error, and three stolen bases. Andy Paz delivered the biggest blow of the frame with a two-run single. Paz is now 13-25 with nine RBI against Chicago this year.

The two teams will meet again on Tuesday night at Impact Field for a special Independence Day celebration. Southpaw Evan Smith will make his first start of the summer for the Dogs, while fellow lefty Alex Gunn will counter for the RailCats.
