Goldeyes Blanked by Explorers

SIOUX CITY, IA - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-23) lost 4-0 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Tuesday night.

Explorers' starter Justin Vernia (6-1) earned the win, pitching seven and one-third shutout innings. Vernia allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out nine. Vernia retired the first 16 batters to face him before Jordan Ebert singled through the right side with one out in the top of the sixth.

The Explorers (34-10) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out, two-run single from Daniel Jackson. Dylan Kelly hit a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth to stretch Sioux City's lead to 4-0.

Shane Dawson (3-1) took the loss for the Goldeyes, allowing two earned runs on seven hits over four innings. Dawson walked two and struck out two.

Brandon Bingel worked three innings of long relief. Carter Johnson tossed a scoreless bottom of the eighth. Josh Romanski's hitting streak was snapped at 12 games.

Ryan Flores retired all five batters to face him in relief of Vernia.

The series concludes Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Kevin McGovern (3-0, 3.45) faces right-hander Luis Mateo (6-2, 4.53). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
