Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Winnipeg Goldeyes (21-22) lost 5-4 to the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis and Clark Park on Monday night.
Dave Sappelt hit a solo home run to left field two batters into the game to give Winnipeg a 1-0 lead.
The Explorers (33-10) went in front in the bottom of the second. Nate Samson singled to left-centre leading off. After JC Sulbaran retired the next two batters, Dexture McCall worked a nine-pitch walk to extend the inning. Dylan Kelly grounded a single up the middle to score Samson with the tying run. Daniel Jackson followed with a single through the left side that brought home McCall.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jay Baum walked with one out and advanced to second when McCall singled through the right side. Kelly singled down the right field line to score Baum, and McCall came home to make it 4-1 on the ensuing throw to second base.
Jose Sermo singled home Michael Lang with two outs in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the Explorers' lead to 5-1.
The Goldeyes chipped away with two runs in the top of the sixth. Josh Romanski drew a leadoff walk, and advanced to second two batters later when Tommy Mendonca poked a single down the left field line. Andrew Sohn then lined a single to left that scored Romanski. Mendonca scored Winnipeg's third run on the same play when left fielder Luis Durango was charged with an error.
In the top of the seventh, Tyler Baker drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Sappelt singled to left. Left-hander Patrick Schuster relieved right-hander Tyler Fallwell, and walked Romanski on five pitches to load the bases. After right-hander Parker Markel relieved Schuster, Reggie Abercrombie hit a long single to left that scored Baker. Markel recovered and escaped the inning with the one-run lead intact.
Jack Charleston threw a scoreless bottom of the seventh to keep the Goldeyes within one run, and Brandon Bingel did the same in the eighth. Charleston was pitching on a fifth consecutive calendar day, and leads the American Association with 26 appearances.
Markel struck out the side in the top of the eighth, while Eric Karch worked a perfect top of the ninth to close out the game and earn his sixth save.
Keith Picht (3-2) earned the win for the Explorers, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits over five and one-third innings. Picht walked two and struck out six.
Sulbaran (0-1) took the loss for Winnipeg, allowing four earned runs on five hits in four-plus innings. Sulbaran walked three and struck out three.
PJ Browne worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Goldeyes. Baker threw out two potential base stealers in his Goldeyes' debut behind the plate, including Lang in the seventh. Lang had been 16-for-17 in stolen base attempts against Winnipeg since 2012. Romanski has hit safely in 12 consecutive games since returning to the Goldeyes.
The series continues Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Shane Dawson (3-0, 3.38) makes his first start since June 1st opposite Sioux City right-hander Justin Vernia (5-1, 3.33). All the action can be heard locally on 93.7 FM CJNU and worldwide at www.cjnu.ca
