Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- Matt Miller scored the game-winning goal on the power play for the Dayton Gems, as they edged the Mississippi RiverKings 2-1 Friday, January 21st at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven.
Mississippi opened the scoring quickly with a goal from Chris Auger, his fourth of the season at 18 seconds of the contest. Auger netted the fastest goal to start a game from a RiverKings' skater this season.
But, the Gems shut down the RiverKings the rest of the night, and Dayton tied the game about five and a half minutes later in the first period on a goal from Nathan Oke, his third of the year, at 5:49. Oke's goal fashioned the 1-1 first intermission result.
Neither team scored in an evenly played second period, as the RiverKings out shot the Gems by a 9-8 margin.
The scoreless run continued into the third period before Miller netted his game-winning goal on a shot from the slot, his first power play goal of the year at 5:18 of the third for the final result.
Mississippi goaltender Alexander Pechurskiy was tagged with the loss, despite making 19 saves. His record fell to 10-8-0 for the season.
Dayton goaltender Jeff Jakaitis claimed his 16th victory (16-12-3) of the season with a 32-save performance.
The Gems were 1-for-8 on the power play, while Mississippi was held scoreless in five power play chances.
With the loss, the RiverKings fell back to 19-19-1 for the season, while the Gems improved to 20-14-3 for the year.
Friday's game was Derek Landmesser's 600th contest in a RiverKings uniform for the team's all-time career appearance leader. He becomes the sixth CHL player in hisory to reach 600 career games.
Saturday's game against Dayton will be Pack The House Night and another Season Ticket Redemption Night. The RiverKings urge Mid-South fans to come out and back the team with a full house for the game with the Gems. There will also be indoor fireworks courtesy of Get Pyro to add an extra blast of excitement to the evening. The National Wild Turkey Federation will be the non-profit MVP of the evening, with a special jersey auction and a post-game skate planned for fans after the game.
