Dayton Gems Capture Third Straight Win
January 21, 2011 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Dayton Gems News Release
When the Dayton Gems defeated Mississippi 2-1 on Friday night, they did it without the usual players doing all the scoring.
Nathan Oke and Matt Miller were the two Gems who scored on the night. The teammates have scored just five goals combined for the Gems this season.
In the end, it didn't matter who did the scoring. What mattered was that Dayton was able to capture its third straight win, matching a season high that was set earlier in the season.
On the defensive end, Jeff Jakaitis played a key role for the Gems. Jakaitis recorded 32 saves on the evening and allowed just one shot to get past him. It's the second time in three games Jakaitis has held his opponent to just one goal.
While the Gems ended up on top, things didn't start out bright for Dayton. Just 18 seconds into the game, the RiverKings took a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Chris Auger.
It was Dayton's Oke who was able to tie the game up at 1-1. Oke was able to score his third goal of the season with a little help from Mike Vaskivuo and Jonathan Ornelas. They each recorded an assist on the goal.
The score stayed tied at 1-1 until Miller was able to record a powerplay goal in the third period and give the Gems a 2-1 lead. Miller scored the game winning goal just a few moments into the third period as the Gems were able to hold Mississippi scoreless for the remainder of the game to claim the 2-1 win.
The Gems will round out their three game road trip by taking on Mississippi again on Saturday. The action will begin at 8:05 p.m.
The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
