WEST VALLEY CITY, UTAH - The Utah Grizzlies, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that goaltender Mike Smith has been named the Sher-Wood AHL Player of the Week for the week extending from December 1-7.

During that stretch, the 21-year-old was between the pipes for three Grizzlies victories allowing just two goals on 80 shots on net. His numbers for the week were 3-0 with a 0.67 goals against average and a.975 save percentage.

The strong week started on December 3rd when Smith stopped 25 shots in a 3-1 victory over Houston. The Kingston, Ontario native then proceeded to turn away 22 shots in a 7-1 victory over Cincinnati on December 6th. However, the second-year Grizzly saved the best performance for last as he earned his first AHL shutout on December 7th making 31 saves in a 2-0 victory over Cincinnati.

After a slow start for Utah, the fifth round selection (161st overall) of the Dallas Stars in the 2001 NHL Draft has moved the Grizzlies back into contention in the Western Division as the team is currently on a season-high three-game winning streak. Smith has won his last four decisions and is 6-5-0 with a 2.55 goals against average and a .917 save percentage on the season.

For receiving the award, the Salt Lake County Youth Hockey Association will receive five equipment bags on Mike Smith's behalf.
