
Mike Ford Walks off a 1-0 Rainiers Win on Saturday

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (2-3) needed only a single run between late Saturday afternoon into the evening, to split a pair of seven-inning games with the Salt Lake Bees (3-2). After being shutout 12-0 in the opener, the Rainiers returned the favor in the nightcap, when DH Mike Ford blasted his first home run of the season to right field for a 1-0 victory. The homer was Tacoma's second hit of game two, one of only three in the contest.
GAME 1
Salt Lake scored first for a third consecutive game with a six-batter second inning; a Chad Wallach RBI single eventually scored on an Andrew Velazquez RBI double down the third base line. The Bees tacked on three more in the third with three consecutive singles to begin the frame, leading to a Wallach two-run double. Luis Rengifo (3-for-4) and Brendon Davis each added a sac fly in the in the fourth, making the score 6-0 Salt Lake.
The Bees' Michael Stefanic went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs, including a sixth inning RBI double. He scored later in the frame on a Davis single. A Magneuris Sierra three-run homer and a Kean Wong RBI single in the seventh rounded out the scoring in the opener.
GAME 2
The game was scoreless from first pitch to last before designated hitter Mike Ford played hero, launching a 1-0 pitch well over the right field wall, leading off the bottom of the seventh.
In his first start with the Rainiers, RHP Daniel Ponce de Leon was in control, shutting out Salt Lake to the tune of four strikeouts with just a hit and two walks allowed over 5.0 IP. RHP Penn Murfee was stellar out of the bullpen, tossing two perfect frames, striking out two.
Bees' starter Davis Daniel delivered a strong 3.2 shutout innings, surrendering only a hit and two walks to go with four strikeouts.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, a 1:35 PT first pitch at Cheney Stadium. Tacoma will start RHP Darren McCaughan for a second time (0-0, 3.18), against Salt Lake's Kenny Rosenberg (LHP).
