Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Binghamton, NY)- For the third night in a row, a big offensive inning from the Binghamton Mets told the story. On Sunday, Binghamton trailed 8-5, but a five-run seventh gave the Mets a 10-8 comeback win, as well as a 3-2 series win over the Portland Sea Dogs at NYSEG Stadium.
Binghamton starter Eric Niesen had control issues early, and the Sea Dogs made sure to capitalize. Che-Hsuan Lin led off the night with a single, which was followed by back-to-back walks. With the bases loaded, Luis Exposito smacked a two-run double, putting the visitors on top right away. Two batters later, Ryan Khoury flew out to right field, scoring Yamaico Navarro with Portland's third run.
The Sea Dogs upped their lead in the second, when Nate Spears drove in Matt Sheely with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom half of the frame, the Mets got on the board, as Mike Nickeas drove in a run with a double, and Jose Coronado grounded out, scoring Raul Reyes.
The offensive outbursts continued in the third. In the top half of the inning, Portland scored twice on three doubles. Ryan Khoury led off with a two-bagger, and proceeded to score on Chih-Hsien Chiang's hit to the gap. Two batters later, Che-Hsuan Lin picked up his second hit of the game, knocking in Chiang. Joshua Satin had Binghamton's lone RBI in their half of the frame, as the Mets scored two other runs on an error by Anthony Rizzo, making the score 6-5 Portland after three.
In the sixth inning, the Sea Dogs added some insurance to their lead. Yamaico Navarro led off with a walk, and after a flyout, Portland loaded the bases on a single and a hit batsman. Chih-Hsien Chiang got his second RBI of the night with a single to left, and Matt Sheely drove in the other run of the inning with a fielder's choice.
Unfortunately for Portland, the insurance runs and the lead went away in the seventh, as the Mets exploded with a huge inning. With one out, four consecutive hitters reached base, including Jose Coronado, whose single brought the home team within two. After an RBI fielder's choice by Jonathan Malo, Kirk Nieuwenhuis ripped a double, driving in a pair for a 9-8 Binghamton lead. Sean Ratliff concluded the rally with an RBI single, scoring Nieuwenhuis, and putting the Mets ahead by a pair.
Binghamton ended up using six pitchers, as they went on to the 10-8 win. Roy Merritt (2-3) got the win, defeating Mitch Herold (2-3), while Edgar Ramirez picked up his first save of the season.
The Sea Dogs will now travel back to Maine for an eight-game homestand, taking them up to the All-Star Break. The first game of that stretch is on Monday night at 6:00, as Portland will entertain the New Hampshire Fisher Cats. The pitching match-up will feature Portland's Kyle Weiland (4-5, 3.95) and New Hampshire's Zach Stewart (6-2, 4.54).
