Asheville Tourists News Release
ASHEVILLE - In the bottom of the 11th inning with the score tied 5-5, Shael Mendoza came to the plate with the winning run at third base. Robinson Cancel dialed up a suicide squeeze and Mendoza put the bunt down to allow Casey Golden to cross home plate and give the Asheville Tourists a 6-5 win.
The Charleston RiverDogs, who came into play undefeated in the second half, scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Oswaldo Cabrera and Steven Sensley hit back-to-back Home Runs in the frame.
Asheville's starting pitcher, Garrett Schilling, really settled in after the rough first and held the RiverDogs at bay. Charleston scored only one run the rest of the game. Meanwhile, the Tourists began to chip away.
Matt McLaughlin plated Mendoza with an RBI double in the third and Bret Boswell hit a two-run Home Run in the fifth. Sean Bouchard led off the sixth with a solo Home Run and Asheville tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a RiverDogs fielding error.
The Tourists bullpen combination of Nate Harris, Braxton Lorenzini, and Erick Julio held the RiverDogs scoreless over the game's final five innings; including the two extra frames where Charleston started the inning with a runner at second base.
McLaughlin finished with a game-high three hits. Asheville has won three straight to match their longest win streak of the season. The Tourists will attempt to make it four in a row on Monday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05pm.
