Greensboro Grasshoppers News Release

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Greensboro saw its season-long 5-game winning streak come to an end with a 4-2 loss to Kannapolis on Sunday afternoon at First National Bank Field. The Grasshoppers loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, threatening to come back, before the Intimidators slammed the door.

Down 4-1 heading into the home half of the ninth, Thomas Jones and Jose Dever singled off Will Kincanon to put a pair of men on base, and Lazaro Alonso added a 1-out walk to load the bases. Kincanon uncorked a wild pitch, scoring Jones and bringing the tying run into scoring position. Kincanon bounced back by striking out Marcos Rivera and inducing a groundout by Isael Soto to end the game.

Zach Lewis (2-2) earned the win for the Intimidators, limiting the Hoppers to one run on three hits while striking out two and walking one over 5.0 innings. Kincanon notched the save (1). Ryan Lillie (6-2) suffered his first loss since May 2, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out four and walked none in his first start since representing Greensboro in the South Atlantic League All-Star Game presented by Pizza Hut on Tuesday.

Kannapolis built a solid lead with single tallies in four straight innings from the second through fifth frames, building a 4-0 lead. In the second, Michael Hickman led off with a double before scoring two batters later when Justin Yurchak traded places with him on an RBI-double. One inning later, Luis Curbelo doubled with two outs to put a runner in scoring position, and Craig Dedelow singled to drive him in for a 2-0 lead. Yurchak and Curbelo each hit solo home runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively to double the Intimidators' lead.

Greensboro broke the shutout in the bottom of the fifth, cutting into the Kannapolis lead, 4-1. Isael Soto doubled with one out to put a Hoppers runner in scoring position for the first time since early in the first inning. Two batters later, Ricardo Cespedes hit a 2-out RBI-double.

Hoppers relievers Michael Mertz and Nestor Bautista each spun 2.0 scoreless innings to keep things close during the later innings.

Intimidators reliever Jake Elliott, who also pitched the All-Star Game, tossed 3.0 scoreless, hitless relief innings while striking out four.

The Grasshoppers continue this 3-game series against the Intimidators on Monday at 7:00 p.m. with a Money Off Monday presented by Circle K. Tickets are available online at gsohoppers.com.
