Greenville Drive News Release
Rome, GA - Sunday's seesaw affair between the Greenville Drive and the Rome Braves ended up going the way of the home team, as the Braves scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to defeat the Drive 7-5.
With the Braves (2-2, 42-31) leading 5-3 entering the eighth inning, the Drive (1-3, 26-47) came back to tie the game. After a single by Victor Acosta, a walk by Michael Osinski and a sacrifice by Tanner Nishioka, Jordan Wren came through with a two-run single through the right side to make the score 5-5.
Unfortunately for the Drive, the tie was short lived, as Riley Delgado lined a two-run double to right field off Lukas Young (0-3) in the bottom half of the eighth to put Rome ahead. Cutter Dyals (1-1) then kept the Drive off the scoreboard in the ninth to earn the victory.
Rome jumped out in front 1-0 against Denyi Reyes in the first with an RBI single by Hagen Owenby, but Nishioka answered in the top of the second with a solo homer to left-center off Bruce Zimmermann. The long ball was his second of the year.
The teams continued to trade runs for the rest of the afternoon. Drew Lugbauer doubled home a run for the Braves in the third, and that was answered in the top of the fifth on a solo homer by Marino Campana, his 11th of the season.
Isaias Lucena then put the Drive ahead 3-2 in the sixth with a single to score Wren, who doubled with two outs.
Rome then retook the lead at 5-3 in the bottom of the sixth on Isranel Wilson's three-run home run off Reyes.
Wren went 2-4 with two RBI for Greenville. Campana's homer was part of his two-hit game, while Acosta added two hits as well.
The series continues in Rome on Monday night at 7:05. Right-hander Kutter Crawford (1-3, 2.91) takes the mound for the Drive, and the scheduled starter for the Braves is right-hander Alan Rangel (2-4, 5.62).
