May 25, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Truan Mehl's two-run triple highlighted a four-run bottom of the eighth as the Clinton LumberKings came from behind to beat the Peoria Chiefs, 4-3. The big inning also featured RBI singles by John Mayberry and Freddie Thon to cut the deficit to just two. All four runs came across against Chiefs reliever Scott Koerber (L, 2-1).
The comeback gave Omar Poveda (W, 1-5) his first win of the season, as he pitched eight strong innings, allowing just two earned runs on six hits. Poveda struck out nine batters while walking just one. The eight innings pitched marked a season-high. Juan Carlos Garcia (S, 1) worked a perfect ninth inning to get his first save of the year.
The Chiefs posted single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Left-fielder Alberto Garcia belted an RBI double to center-field to start the scoring, and first-baseman Ryan Norwood added a run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
For the LumberKings, Mehl's triple was one of two extra-base hits on the night, as he also knocked a double in a 2-for-4 night. The 1-through-5 in the L-Kings order all posted at least one hit in the game.
Peoria starter Mitch Atkins pitched seven innings of shutout baseball, allowing just three hits in the no-decision.
The LumberKings and Chiefs face off again tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch slated for 6:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
