Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Pitching was the name of the game Thursday night at John O'Donnell Stadium, as Jaime Garcia got the better of Nick Adenhart and the Swing squeaked out a 1-0 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Garcia, getting even for a loss sustained Friday night in a matchup between the two staff aces, saddled Adenhart with the complete game loss in a game that lasted only two hours and seven minutes.
Quad Cities (19-25) started off the set on the right foot, entering the series having lost four and split one of their four-game match-ups at John O 'Donnell Stadium this season. Coming off a sweep at the hands of first-place Kane County, Cedar Rapids (20-27) has now lost five in a row.
Garcia (3-3) rebounded from his roughest outing of the season six days earlier against Adenhart in Cedar Rapids to snatch the win. The 19-year-old southpaw from Mexico scattered five hits in eight shutout innings, striking out five without issuing a walk. Cedar Rapids put two men on base at the same time only once during the game, and failed to advance a runner past second base all night. The outing was longest of Garcia's career, and the longest by a Swing starter this season.
Quad Cities put their leadoff man on base in each of their first six offensive innings, but failed to put the game's only run on the board until the bottom of the sixth. Bryan Anderson led off the frame with his sixth double in his last five games, but remained standing at third base two outs later. Adam Rodgers then stepped up with the clutch two-out knock, a bouncing ball up the middle that snuck through the infield for the 1-0 edge.
Adenhart (7-1) suffered his first loss of the season, though he remains the Midwest League wins leader. The 19-year-old righthander went the distance, yielding one run on six hits and a walk while striking out six. Despite the loss, Adenhart lowered his ERA to a stingy 1.51 on the season.
Brian Stitt (3) came on to work the ninth inning for the Swing, fanning three in a 1-2-3 frame. The former Mariners farmhand has converted all three of his save chances since joining the Quad Cities roster, and has registered eight strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work without issuing a walk this season.
UP NEXT: The Swing of the Quad Cities will host the Cedar Rapids Kernels for game two of the four-game series on Friday night, as RHP Mark McCormick (1-3, 3.76) will take the mound against RHP Stephen Marek (4-1, 2.33). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., with coverage on Progressive Talk AM-1270 beginning at 6:45 p.m.
UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: Baseball America magazines will be distributed on Friday, and your favorite characters from the Rugrats will be at John O' Donnell Stadium the same day thanks to Mediacom and Star 93.5. The busy homestand will conclude with a baseball cap giveaway (Mountain Dew, 97 Rock, Fox-18) on Saturday and another Mix 96 Family Fun Day on Sunday - also Scott County YMCA's day at the ballpark with post-game fireworks sponsored in part by KWQC, KUUL, and WOC.
