Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release
The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps by a score of 5-4 on Thirsty Thursday at C.O. Brown Stadium. The game was delayed 23 minutes due to rain but the clouds broke up and the fans enjoyed a beautiful night at the ballpark.
Devil Rays starter Mike Wlodarczyk entered the game with an impeccable 38 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run. The first place Whitecaps ended that streak in the sixth inning when Wlodarczyk was charged four runs. The Devil Rays stud still fanned six batters and didn't allow a hit in the first four frames.
Cesar Suarez made his debut for Southwest Michigan and gave them the lift that they needed at the plate. Suarez went 3-4 with a double and two runs scored while being named player of the game. Jason St. Clair also made his debut for the Rays but failed to register a hit by going 0-4 from the batters box.
Garrett Groce has been one of the most consistent hitters for the Devil Rays this season but hadn't gone yard until tonight. Groce took a 0-0 pitch over the left field wall to lead off the fourth inning. Groce's homer brings the HBC Clear the Fence for Cancer total to $900 on the year.
Kevin Lynn picked up the win while relieving Wlodarczyk. Lynn pitched 1.2 perfect innings. Aaron Walker and Greg Dupas pitched the eighth and ninth inning respectively and neither allowed a run. Dupas picked up his 13th save of the year and only allowed one hit.
The Devil Rays and Whitecaps square off again on Friday for their second game in this four game series. Friday night is the second of ten fireworks shows this season at C.O. Brown Stadium. Hang out after the game to see the best fireworks show in town. It is also "Win a Grounds Crew Night". Three lucky fans will be selected to have the Devil Rays grounds crew work in their yard for a day.
