Hawks bats remain sluggish

May 25, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

South Bend - Tuesday morning, the Silver Hawks played a getaway game against the West Michigan Whitecaps, seemingly leaving their bats behind, collecting just one hit in a 3-0 blanking by the Whitecaps. Thursday night, the Silver Hawks bats did not receive much of a wake up call as the Hawks managed just six hits in a 3-2 loss to the Dayton Dragons.

Dayton scored the runs it needed in the second inning. B.J. Szymanski opened with a single to right and Habelito Hernandez followed by drilling a home run to left field, his first of the campaign.

Scoring and hitting were at a minimum after the Hernandez blast. Silver Hawks starting pitcher Cody Evans threw 7.2 innings allowing five hits striking out five and between the second and first batter in the top of the sixth retired 11 consecutive hitters.

Dayton's Johnny Cueto was as stellar, throwing seven innings, fanning seven Silver Hawks, allowed two hits and retired 13 straight from the second to the sixth.

Frank Curreri's two-run home run in the eighth pulled the Hawks within a run, but that was as close as the Hawks would get.

Johnny Cueto (5-1) gets the win and Hawks starter Cody Evans (1-6) suffers the loss.

The Silver Hawks (20-25) and Dragons continue their four game set Friday night with first pitch at 6:30PM and gates opening at 5:30PM.

Fans can purchase tickets for Wednesday's game and all Silver Hawks games by calling the box office at (574) 235-9988 or visiting www.silverhawks.com.
