Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities managed just one run and six hits off Kernels ace Nick Adenhart but that was enough for victory at John O'Donnell Stadium on Thursday night as the St. Louis Cardinals affiliate took a 1-0 decision over Cedar Rapids.

Adenhart (7-1) was once again dominant for the Kernels but so too was his opponent, Swing lefty Jaime Garcia (3-3), who limited the visitors to just five hits over eight innings of work. Adenhart got the better of Garcia during the duo's first meeting on May 19 at Veterans Memorial Stadium when the Kernels defeated the Swing 4-1.

Garcia struck out five in eight innings of work while Adenhart fanned six in a game that took just 2 hours and 7 minutes to complete.

The Swing had runners in scoring position with less than two outs in the second, third, and fourth innings but could not break through against Adenhart. Finally Quad Cities got on the board in the sixth when Adam Rodgers knocked a single up the middle to plate Bryan Anderson.

The loss by the Kernels was the team's fifth in a row, which matches their longest losing streak of the season. The Kernels dropped five straight April 24-28 during a road trip to Southwest Michigan and Lansing. At 20-27, the Kernels fell 8 1/2 games behind Kane County for first place.

Brian Stitt relieved Garcia in the ninth and retired the Kernels 1-2-3 to earn his second save of the season.

Jordan Renz and Dallas Morris both collected a pair of hits as the Kernels mustered just five hits off Garcia and Swing.

Morris gave the Kernels their best chance to win the game late when he laced a leadoff double in the seventh, but Morris was thrown out trying to steal third with one out later in the inning. Renz and Morris both poked one-out singles off the Swing left-hander in the fourth, but Garcia got Flint Wipke and Mark Trumbo to fly out to right to end the inning.

The Kernels will look to snap their five-game losing streak on Friday night when they travel back to John O'Donnell to face the Swing at 7 p.m. Right-hander Stephen Marek (4-1) takes the hill against Mark McCormick (1-3), a 2005 first-round pick by the Cardinals.
