Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GENEVA, IL -- Kane County Cougar third baseman Jeff Baisley hit three homers and drove in five runs to lead the Kane County Cougars to an 11-3 whitewashing of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Thursday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Jared Lansford pitched seven shutout innings and gave up just two hits for the win. The win was Kane County's eighth straight victory.

Baisley gave the Cougars (28-18) a 1-0 advantage with a lead off home run in the bottom of the second inning. Later in the same inning, a bloop single by Jose Pineda put Kane County in front 2-0.

A two-out double by Steve Kleen in the third drove in another run for a 3-0 lead.

Rattler starter Harold Williams had to leave the game with one out and runners on first and second in the bottom of the third as he was over ninety pitches in the game and nearing his pitch limit. Ruben Flores entered and got the second out of the inning. Then things went to the bizarre side of baseball.

Nick Blasi sent a slow roller to short for an infield single. Rattler shortstop Jeff Dominguez faked a throw to first and Pineda, the runner at second when Williams left the game, rounded third too far and got caught in a rundown. Dominguez wound up with the ball after three throws, but missed Pineda, who made it safely back to third.

During the rundown of Pineda, Justin Sellers, the runner at first at the start of the play, got to within three steps of third base. Dominguez threw to get Sellers as he tried to make it back to second base wound up in right field and both Pineda and Sellers scored for a 5-0 lead.

Kane County put the game away with a four run sixth. A two-run triple from Frank Martinez was followed by the second homer of the night by Baisley.

Lansford left the game after seven innings. He allowed two hits and no runs with five walks, two hit batsmen, and one strikeout. In his last three starts -- all wins, Lansford had not allowed a run and given up just three hits.

But, Baisley wasn't done. After Martinez walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth, Baisley hit his third homer of the night -- and eleventh of the season -- to leftcenter off Rattler reliever Rollie Gibson.

Wisconsin spoiled the shutout in the top of the ninth inning. Michael Saunders launched a three-run homer to rightcenter off Cougar reliever Joe Newby, but it wasn't nearly enough.

The Rattlers have lost three straight and are now a season low ten games under .500 (18-28).

Game two of the four game series is Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Jose Escalona (4-3, 2.95ERA) will get the starting pitching assignment for the Timber Rattlers. Victor Mazzaro (4-4, 5.62ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Cougars. Game time is 6:30pm.
