Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs had their three-game winning streak end on Wednesday night with a 8-1 loss to the Pawtucket Red Sox at NBT Bank Stadium. Pedro Severino led the Chiefs with two hits in the game, including a double.
Pawtucket (49-58) scored early with a run in the top of the first inning. Tzu-Wei Lin led off the game with a double. Tony Renda followed with a groundout to second base that moved Lin to third base. Rusney Castillo then walked to put runners at first and third. After a Brandon Phillips pop out to second base, Sam Travis singled to center field, scoring Lin to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
Syracuse (45-64) tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, José Marmolejos singled. Pedro Severino followed with a double that hit off the top of the right-center-field wall, placing runners at second and third. Alejandro De Aza then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, plating Marmolejos to knot the game up, 1-1.
The Red Sox regained the lead in the top of the seventh. With one out, Aneury Tavarez hit a ball over the right-field fence for a solo home run that put Pawtucket back in front, 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, the tarp was put on the field and rain began to fall, causing a rain delay. The delay lasted 37 minutes before play resumed.
The rain ended the night for both starting pitchers. Chiefs starting pitcher Kyle McGowin made another strong start in his second appearance with Syracuse this season. The right-hander allowed just three hits and two runs in seven innings while walking two batters and striking out three. Red Sox starter Chandler Shepherd threw six and one-third innings of one-run baseball with five hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.
Pawtucket added a run in the eighth off Syracuse reliever Trevor Gott. î"scar Hernández led off with a single. Tzu-Wei Lin then grounded into a fielder's choice where Hernández was out at second, but Lin was safe at first. With Renda batting, Lin stole second base and moved to third on an errant throw that went in to center field on the play. Renda proceeded with a double that scored Lin to give Pawtucket a 3-1 advantage.
The Red Sox tagged on four runs in the ninth. Travis singled to lead off the frame. Tavarez was then hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Kyle Wren followed with a double, scoring Travis to make it a 4-1 ballgame. A Cole Sturgeon single to center field brought home Tavarez from third to push the Pawtucket lead to four, 5-1. With Hernández batting, Sturgeon stole second base. Hernández then struck out for the first out of the inning, but Lin singled home both Wren and Sturgeon for a 7-1 advantage. Renda and Castillo followed with singles to load the bases. Phillips then singled to right field to score Lin and extend the Red Sox lead to seven, 8-1.
Syracuse and Pawtucket conclude their four-game series on Thursday evening. RHP Brady Dragmire is scheduled to pitch for the Chiefs while LHP Josh D. Smith will be on the mound for the Red Sox. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
