Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, in conjunction with the Eastern League of Professional Baseball Clubs, are pleased to announce that 3B Daniel Mayora has been named Eastern League Player of the Week for the week ending July 15th.
With a shortened week due to the Baseballtown All-Star Classic, which he competed in, Mayora did all his damage against the Harrisburg Senators at Metro Bank Park. The 26-year old started all five games against the Senators and went 11-15 (.733) at the plate. He racked up four doubles and also cracked a three-run home run, his second of the season. The Venezuelan drove in six runs and scored five more. Included was a four-hit game on Saturday, and a stretch in which Mayora collected base hits in six straight at-bats.
Formerly a member of the Colorado and Tampa Bay farm systems, Mayora is spending his first season in the Giants organization. His selection to the Western Division All-Star team marked the fourth consecutive year he has been named a mid-season All-Star (Tulsa - '09, '10, Montgomery - '11). Overall, he has been named to six All-Star teams in his eight-year professional career. Mayora finished second in the Baseballtown Hitting Challenge to Harrisburg's Chris Rahl.
Mayora presently leads the Squirrels in batting average (.299) and RBIs (43).
Mayora is the third Squirrel to earn a weekly award from the Eastern League in 2012. RHP Chris Heston and RHP Justin Fitzgerald earned the prior two. Mayora's award is the ninth in franchise history, and he becomes just the second Squirrel to earn Player of the Week honors (Chris Dominguez - '11). The seven other weekly awards have been claimed by pitchers.
The Squirrels open a seven-game home stand at The Diamond against the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates) on Monday night. Tickets for the game are available and can be purchased by visiting SquirrelsBaseball.com .
