
Thunder Come from Behind Twice in 6-5 Win over Mets

(Binghamton, NY) - The Trenton Thunder scored a pair of runs in the eighth inning to erase a late deficit and defeat the Binghamton Mets, 6-5, Monday night at NYSEG Stadium. J.R. Murphy tied the game in the eighth with a sacrifice fly and Rob Segedin delivered the go-ahead RBI single as the Thunder (55-39) twice erased two-run deficits from the Mets to move a season-high 16 games above .500.
Danny Farquhar recorded the final six outs for his fourth save in his last four appearances, including three one-run saves on the current road trip. Graham Stoneburner (1-0) pitched three relief innings behind starter Mikey O'Brien and earned his first win of the season.
Trenton trailed 5-3 entering the sixth inning but inched back within a run when Melky Mesa homered against Binghamton starter Darin Gorski, his 12th of the season. Addison Maruszak and Zoilo Almonte had earlier hit back-to-back home runs in the fourth against Gorski to erase a 3-1 deficit against Gorski.
Still trailing 5-4 in the eighth, Almonte and Mesa began the inning with consecutive hits against reliever Ryan Fraser (2-2). After Luke Murton walked to load the bases, Murphy drove his sac fly to right to tie the score at 5. Segedin, the next batter, singled between first and second base plating Mesa with the eventual winning run.
Mesa went 3-for-5 to pace Trenton's 13-hit attack, while Murphy went 2-for-3 and also threw out four baserunners while catching. Jose Pirela, Maruszak, and Almonte also had a pair of hits.
The Thunder and Mets the three-game series with game two Tuesday night with first pitch slated for 6:35 pm. Right-hander Dellin Betances (1-1, 2.41) is expected to start for Trenton while Binghamton counters with righty Greg Peavey (3-6, 6.23). Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 6:20 pm.
