PORTLAND, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce the winners of the Eastern League Player of the Week Award and Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Award for the period of July 9th through July 15th:

Richmond Flying Squirrels third baseman Daniel Mayora has been selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of July 9th-July 15th. The 5'11", 175 lb. slugger batted .733 (11-for-15) with four doubles, one home run, six RBI, five runs scored, one stolen base, one walk and a 1.200 slugging percentage in five games for the Flying Squirrels last week. Mayora, who is a native of La Guaria, Venezuela, reached base and drove in or scored at least one run in all five games he played in last week and had three multiple hit games, including going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI in a 12-3 win at Harrisburg on Thursday. He added a four-hit performance in Richmond's 5-4 win at Harrisburg on Saturday. The 26-year old led all Eastern League players in batting average (.733), extra-base hits (5), doubles (4), total bases (18) and on-base percentage (.778) last week. He also finished ranked among the weekly leaders in hits (11-tied 1st), slugging percentage (1.200-2nd), OPS (1.978-2nd), RBI (6-tied 3rd) and runs scored (5-tied 5th). Daniel, who was a member of the Western Division roster for the 2012 Baseballtown Eastern League All-Star Classic in Reading last week, was signed by the San Francisco Giants as a minor league free agent prior to this season.

Giovanni Soto, a left-handed starting pitcher for the Akron Aeros, has been selected as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the period of July 9th-July 15th. The 21-year old started one game for the Aeros last week and had a record of 1-0 with six strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA. Soto, who is a native of Carolina, Puerto Rico, made his only appearance of the week against the Altoona Curve on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park and faced just one batter over the minimum while throwing a no-hitter in a 2-1 victory. He struck out six batters and walked three while giving up just one unearned run. With his performance the 6'3", 180 lb. hurler became the first Akron Aeros pitcher to throw a 9-inning no-hitter at Canal Park in franchise history. It was also just the second time in the history of the franchise that an Aeros pitcher has thrown a 9-inning no-hitter. The first was a perfect game thrown by Jeanmar Gomez at Trenton on May 21, 2009. Giovanni, who has put together a record of 6-6 with 87 strikeouts and a 3.73 ERA in 18 starts with the Aeros this season, was acquired by the Cleveland Indians from the Detroit Tigers on July 29, 2010 in a trade for Jhonny Peralta. He was originally selected by the Tigers in the 21st round of the 2009 draft.
